Gonzalo Valle, Liga’s last line of defence who will get his chance for redemption against Palmeiras

Todos abrazan a Gonzalo Valle, el héroe de la noch
  • The goalkeeper proved decisive in both matches against Mirassol and saved the only missed penalty in the shootout in Quito

  • A ligament injury ruled him out of the 2025 Semi-finals against Palmeiras, the team Liga will face again in the Quarter-finals

When Victor Luis placed the ball on the spot to take Mirassol’s first penalty, Gonzalo Valle had already spent two matches keeping Liga de Quito’s hopes of qualification alive. His save from 12 yards was the crowning moment of a memorable performance across the entire tie.

Valle had already played a decisive role a week earlier in Brazil. Mirassol took the lead in the first half and had opportunities to extend their advantage, but the goalkeeper kept Liga within touching distance. His saves helped the Ecuadorian side withstand their most difficult spells and remain alive heading into the closing stages. Michael Estrada’s subsequent equaliser left the tie wide open, while Valle was named Player of the Match.

The return leg at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium once again demanded Valle’s intervention. Liga controlled possession for long stretches, but Mirassol found spaces to attack and became increasingly dangerous in the second half. Valle denied Fernandinho shortly after the restart, kept out a Denilson effort during the visitors’ strongest spell and came to the rescue again in stoppage time, when Daniel Borges produced one of the clearest chances of the night.

Mirassol finished the match looking the more threatening side, but Valle always had an answer. His saves took the contest to a shootout that ultimately cemented his status as the hero of the tie: he stopped the visitors’ first penalty and handed his teammates an advantage that Deyverson, Jesús Pretell, Michael Estrada, Gian Franco Allala and Fernando Cornejo all preserved with their conversions. The 5-4 shootout victory sent Liga into the last eight of the continent’s premier club competition for the second consecutive season.

That importance in the CONMEBOL Libertadores continues a story that began to take on another dimension during the previous edition. Valle had joined Liga de Quito at the start of 2024 after spending much of his career with Guayaquil City. His first season was largely spent as an understudy to Alexander Domínguez, one of the club’s most prominent figures and a key player in several domestic and international triumphs.

The situation changed in 2025. Valle was handed his opportunity in the CONMEBOL Libertadores and turned every appearance into an argument for keeping his place between the posts. He played ten matches during Liga’s run to the Semi-finals and made 49 saves. Fifteen of those came in the Quarter-final tie against São Paulo alone, as the Ecuadorian side kept two clean sheets and advanced with a 3-0 aggregate victory.

His performances on the continental stage also earned him a place with the Ecuador national team. In June of that year, he made his debut against Brazil in the South American Qualifiers and started again against Peru. He kept clean sheets in both matches. However, his best season was cut short before the biggest challenge of all. In the days leading up to the Semi-final against Palmeiras, Valle felt discomfort in his knee and subsequent tests revealed a ligament sprain. His recovery was expected to take between 12 and 16 weeks, ruling him out of both legs of the tie and the remainder of 2025.

Alexander Domínguez stepped in between the posts. Liga defeated Palmeiras 3-0 in Quito, but the Brazilian side overturned the tie with a 4-0 victory in São Paulo. Valle had been one of the main reasons behind Liga’s run to that stage, yet the injury prevented him from taking part in the clash that ultimately decided his team’s continental fate.

Football now offers him a chance for redemption. After reclaiming his place and once again proving decisive in the CONMEBOL Libertadores, Valle will come up against the same opponent he was unable to face a year ago. This time, he will not be forced to watch the tie from the sidelines, but will instead arrive as one of the pillars of a team that reached the Quarter-finals thanks in large part to his performances since the Group Stage.

Palmeiras represent Liga de Quito’s next challenge and also a personal opportunity for Valle to settle unfinished business. The goalkeeper cannot change what happened in 2025, but he can reclaim the role that injury took away from him. After guiding his team through two matches and a penalty shootout against Mirassol, he will finally have the chance to face a challenge that had been left unresolved.
