- Timão defeated Rosario Central 1-0 at home to secure their place in the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter-finals.
- The Brazilian side played much of the second half with ten men following Raniele's dismissal, but Bidon stepped up as the hero to send his team through.
It was a tie packed with big names, both in the first leg and the return fixture. The two Round of 16 matches ultimately saw Corinthians emerge victorious. The Brazilian side will face Estudiantes de La Plata in the next round, after the Argentine outfit eliminated Universidad Católica.
The Arena Corinthians provided the setting for a contest that closely resembled last week's first leg at the Gigante de Arroyito.
Corinthians dominated proceedings in the first half, but lacked the penetration required to seriously trouble the Argentine side. The only real chance came in the 13th minute, when Kaio César's effort forced Jeremías Ledesma to produce a fine save, diving to his right to turn the Brazilian's shot away.
With an intelligent tactical approach, Central neutralised Corinthians' dominance and levelled the contest, relying on individual battles and intense pressing across the pitch.
Raniele's dismissal for the home side in the 10th minute of the second half did not alter the plans of Fernando Diniz's team. Rodrigo Garro, the captain, André Carrillo and Breno Bidon stepped up to raise their levels and cover the extra ground.
Rosario Central forward Enzo Copetti had a clear chance in the 27th minute of the second half but failed to take it. He capitalised on a defensive mistake to go one-on-one with Hugo Souza, only to send his finish over the crossbar.
The reward for Timão's endeavour arrived ten minutes from time. Memphis Depay, who had come on for Pedro Raul, delivered a cross from the left and Bidon got there ahead of Copetti to turn the ball home and make it 1-0.
After the goal, Central lost their shape and pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Hugo Souza, the São Paulo side's goalkeeper, saved the final effort from Uruguayan Alan Rodríguez to seal the victory and send Corinthians through.
