- The Ecuadorian side drew 0-0 with Mirassol following the 1-1 result in Brazil and prevailed 5-4 in the penalty shootout
- Gonzalo Valle saved the first kick of the shootout before Fernando Cornejo converted the decisive penalty to secure qualification
Liga de Quito were made to suffer until the very end, but ultimately achieved their objective: a place among the final eight teams in the CONMEBOL Libertadores once again. In a tie that remained finely balanced until the final kick, the Ecuadorian side played out a goalless draw with Mirassol at the Rodrigo Paz Delgado Stadium before sealing qualification in the penalty shootout. Gonzalo Valle, the standout performer of the match, denied Victor Luis, while all five of the hosts’ takers converted to complete a 5-4 victory.
The 1-1 draw in the first leg had shifted all the tension to Quito. Liga initially took control of the contest and looked to establish themselves around the Brazilian side’s penalty area through the interplay of Fernando Cornejo, Jesús Pretell and Sebastián González. Mirassol responded with a five-man defensive line, closed down the central spaces and tried to turn every recovery into a quick transition.
The visitors’ first major warning came from a mistake in Liga’s build-up. Shaylon received the ball near the edge of the area and tried to take advantage of Valle being well off his line, but his effort went narrowly wide of the post. Liga responded shortly afterwards through Josué Cuero, whose run carried him into the box but ended without a precise finish in front of Walter.
The pattern of the game changed after the interval. Mirassol pushed higher up the pitch and tested Valle through a Fernandinho effort shortly after the restart, allowing the goalkeeper to begin building what would become a memorable performance. Gustavo Álvarez sought to give the Ecuadorian side greater attacking presence with the introductions of Deyverson and Alexander Alvarado, although Liga’s possession did not always translate into penetration.
Mirassol applied their greatest pressure during the closing stages. Valle kept out a Denilson effort before Luis Segovia blocked Neto Moura’s follow-up. Alesson and André Luis also found space to threaten inside the penalty area, while Daniel Borges had the clearest opportunity in stoppage time: Liga’s goalkeeper came to the rescue once again to keep his side alive. At the other end, Michael Estrada had one final chance, but he was unable to beat Walter and sent his effort over the crossbar.
After 180 minutes and two draws, the tie was left in the hands of the penalty takers. Victor Luis stepped up first for Mirassol, but Valle dived to his left and saved his attempt. Deyverson, Pretell, Estrada and Gian Franco Allala all converted to preserve Liga’s advantage, while Alesson, Carlos Eduardo, Neto Moura and Bruno Santos kept the visitors in contention.
The responsibility for the final kick fell to Fernando Cornejo. The midfielder converted Liga’s fifth penalty to spark celebrations in Quito. The Ecuadorian side thus advanced to the Quarter-finals for the second consecutive edition and will once again face Palmeiras, the team that eliminated them in the previous campaign and their next opponent in this year’s tournament.
