Long-time supporters may have felt echoes of 2003, when their team produced a historic campaign with victories over Universidad Católica, Santos, Atlético Nacional and River Plate on the way to lifting the first — and so far only — CONMEBOL Sudamericana title in the club’s history. Twenty-three years later, against the reigning champions of La Gran Conquista, the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega witnessed another remarkable feat: Cienciano overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit with a commanding 4-0 victory over Lanús to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 continental competition.
Despite the deficit in the tie, head coach Horacio Melgarejo never stopped believing. Neither did his players, who came out determined to turn the series around from the opening minute and pinned back a Lanús side whose clearest early chance came five minutes into the first half, when Ramiro Carrera tried his luck from distance and goalkeeper Ítalo Espinoza dealt with the effort comfortably. From that moment on, ‘El Papá de América’ unleashed a relentless attacking storm that would culminate in a historic victory.
Cienciano added another historic chapter to their story, built on the quality and experience of two of their modern-day leaders. Thirty-six-year-old striker Carlos Garcés and 34-year-old playmaker Alejandro Hohberg spearheaded the team, scoring two goals apiece. They were the standout names on a flawless night for the Peruvian side, with Cristian Souza also playing a decisive role from the right flank by providing two assists.
The hosts lived up to their nickname. ‘La Furia Roja’ showcased all of their strengths on a perfect night that began seven minutes into the first half, when Garcés — increasingly established among the club’s all-time leading scorers — met Souza’s cross and turned the ball in with his knee. With two wingers holding wide positions, Melgarejo’s side sent a relentless stream of crosses into the Lanús penalty area. Carlos Izquierdoz, José Canale and goalkeeper Nahuel Losada held firm for a time, but every delivery carried genuine danger for a Granate side under sustained pressure.
The goal confirmed Cienciano’s dominance, and they soon doubled their lead through a long-range effort from Hohberg that Losada got a touch to but could not keep out. With the aggregate score now level, the hosts pushed for more. Before the break, Souza once again burst down the right and delivered a precise cross into the heart of the box. Garcés got in front of the centre-backs and produced a spectacular diving header to score his second goal of the night.
Lanús attempted to respond after the interval, but the comeback never truly materialized. Cienciano managed their advantage, rarely looked troubled despite the introductions of Allan Wlk and Matías Sepúlveda, remained fully focused and frustrated an Argentine side that gradually ran out of answers as the minutes passed. With Lanús committing numbers forward in search of a way back, Garcés led a transition and set up Hohberg, who calmly finished past Losada to make it 4-0 and complete his own brace.
With a 4-2 aggregate victory, Cienciano knocked out the reigning champions and once again placed their name among the leading contenders in ‘La Gran Conquista’. Twenty-three years after the triumph that forever changed the history of Peruvian football, ‘El Papá de América’ produced another unforgettable comeback and secured their place in the Round of 16, where they will face Botafogo between August 11 and 20. The club’s old continental mystique remains very much alive in Cusco.

- Cienciano are the first team to advance in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana after losing the first leg away from home by two or more goals since São Paulo eliminated Atlético Goianiense in the 2022 semifinals, losing the first leg 3-1 before winning the return 2-0 and progressing on penalties.
- Cienciano ended a run of three consecutive defeats against Argentine opponents in CONMEBOL competitions. They had also not eliminated a team from Argentina since defeating Boca on penalties in the 2004 CONMEBOL Recopa.
- This is the seventh time a Peruvian team has won a CONMEBOL Sudamericana match by four goals or more. Four of those victories belong to Cienciano: 4-0 against Universidad Católica in 2003, 6-1 against Carabobo in 2004, 4-0 against Iquique in 2025 and 4-0 against Lanús in 2026.
- The only two players since 2023 to score more than once and provide an assist in the first half of a CONMEBOL Sudamericana match have both done so for Cienciano: Gaspar Gentile against Iquique in May 2025, with two goals and one assist, and Carlos Garcés tonight against Lanús, also with two goals and one assist.
- In the first half alone, Cristian Souza (Cienciano) provided as many assists (2) as he had previously recorded across his entire CONMEBOL competition career — two in 12 matches since 2019.
- After coming off the bench at halftime, Allan Wlk (Lanús) registered as many touches in the opposition penalty area as all the other Granate players combined (4). The striker leaves the competition having scored two goals for Recoleta during the Group Stage.
- Agustín Medina led Lanús on the night in tackles (4, level with Nicolás Morgantini), recoveries (8) and touches on the ball (64).
