- He is one of Rodolfo ‘El Vasco’ Arruabarrena's assistant coaches, having met the Argentinian manager when he arrived to take charge of Egypt's Pyramids FC in 2020.
- A former centre-back, he retired at 23 without fulfilling his dream of playing for Arsenal in England, but is now valued for his detailed tactical analysis and the fresh energy he brings to the coaching staff.
Amr Mokhtar was a centre-back who made three appearances for Egypt's U-20 national team. But, like so many players embarking on a professional career, he subsequently struggled to establish himself — arguably the toughest challenge in a footballer's life. Amr began his career at ENPPI in his homeland before moving abroad. In 2014, he joined his brother Ahmed — a centre-forward two years his senior — at Feirense in Portugal's second division. He then began racking up a handful of appearances — and flights — during spells with Hercules in Finland, Lovćen in Montenegro, Ismaily in Egypt and Tucson in the United States' second tier. After suffering a knee ligament tear, he retired in 2018 at the age of 23. His dream of playing for Arsenal in England remained unfulfilled (his brother Ahmed is a devoted Manchester United supporter).
Eight years later, Amr Mokhtar — 31, born in Cairo, the Egyptian capital — is one of Rodolfo ‘El Vasco’ Arruabarrena's assistant coaches at Boca Juniors, who will face Atlético Mineiro in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2026 Final on Saturday 21 November at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla, the carnival-loving city on Colombia's Caribbean coast. And there, among the finalists vying for La Gran Conquista, will be an Egyptian with a story all his own.
Mokhtar joined Arruabarrena's coaching staff in November 2020, when the Argentinian manager took charge of Egypt's Pyramids FC, and has accompanied him on his coaching journey ever since. Before arriving at Boca, they worked together with the United Arab Emirates national team and at Saudi Arabian side Al-Taawoun, where they remained until February 2025, their final stop before Boca. Arruabarrena saw something special in the Egyptian. He sensed there was more to a story that is all too familiar in football: a playing career without major achievements, but one shaped by countless miles travelled and experiences gained around the world in pursuit of the dream of making a name for himself in the game.
Mokhtar was already part of the set-up at Pyramids FC — one of Egypt's most powerful clubs, seeking to break the dominance of giants Al-Ahly and Zamalek — when Arruabarrena arrived in 2020. He initially held an operational role. And with an excellent command of Spanish, as well as fluency in English and Portuguese, he first served as Arruabarrena's translator and interpreter, also helping him analyse and communicate his ideas. But their shared understanding of football soon transformed his role: Mokhtar had a knack for simplifying complex concepts and conveying them to the players.
Combining a tactical obsession with a keen eye for identifying opponents' strengths and weaknesses, Mokhtar gradually became ‘El Vasco’ Arruabarrena's main adviser on the characteristics of Egyptian players and the region's wider footballing context. A strong working relationship took shape. Having previously worked with Croatian coach Ante Čačić and Egyptian manager Ehab Galal, Mokhtar joined Arruabarrena's coaching staff. So when ‘El Vasco’ took charge of the United Arab Emirates national team in early 2022, he urged Mokhtar to accompany him. Their bond of trust was reaffirmed in mid-2024, when they joined Saudi Arabian club Al-Taawoun. By then, Mokhtar was firmly established as part of Arruabarrena's inner circle. Today, he remains an active member of a coaching staff that includes Diego Markic and Juan Gobet as assistant coaches, Gustavo Roberti and Cristian Aquino as fitness coaches, and Cristian Muñoz as goalkeeping coach.
Holding an AFC A Coaching Licence issued by the Asian Football Confederation, with additional training in scouting and coaching and expertise in video-based performance analysis, Mokhtar also serves as a link between the first team and the analysts at Boca Predio. Highly regarded within the club for his detailed study of the game, he is the third key member of Arruabarrena's support team behind Markic and Gobet, who sit on the bench during matches, in ‘El Vasco’s’ second spell as Boca head coach. The Egyptian has earned the respect of the squad that reached the CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2026 Final through his warmth, fresh energy and expertise. His colleagues particularly value the tactical insights he delivers with the support of modern technology.
No dia 8 de julho, durante sua apresentação no centro de treinamento do Boca, em Ezeiza, o egípcio — uma figura jovem e multicultural, peça indispensável no planejamento de Arruabarrena — disse aos jogadores: “Muito prazer a todos. Sou Amr Mokhtar… ‘o Egípcio’. Sou do Cairo. Adoro a cultura argentina. Estou muito feliz por estar com vocês e espero que possamos conquistar algo importante neste ano”. Quase quatro meses depois, o Boca está a uma partida de voltar a conquistar um título internacional após 18 anos (Recopa Sudamericana de 2008). E talvez consiga com Amr, nome que, em árabe, significa “prosperidade”.
