- Boca Juniors will aim to become the first club to win the CONMEBOL Sudamericana three times and move clear at the top of the all-time honours list.
- If Atlético Mineiro lift the trophy, Brazil will claim its sixth title and the Belo Horizonte side will join the competition's list of champions.
The CONMEBOL Sudamericana Final between Boca Juniors and Atlético Mineiro will put more than another continental title on the line. The outcome could also reshape several records in the history of the competition, which was first held in 2002. The Xeneize have the chance to become the first three-time winners, while the Brazilian side will be looking to achieve something unprecedented in their trophy cabinet.
Since the competition was created, six clubs have lifted the trophy twice: Lanús, Boca Juniors, Independiente, LDU Quito, Athletico Paranaense and Independiente del Valle. The Final between the Argentine and Brazilian sides will determine whether one of them moves clear of the rest or a new name joins the list of champions.
Two titles: six clubs at the top
Boca Juniors currently share top spot in the all-time honours list with five other teams. The side managed by Rodolfo Arruabarrena won the competition in 2004 and 2005 and now have the opportunity to achieve a landmark feat: becoming the first club to win the CONMEBOL Sudamericana three times.
Independiente have also lifted the trophy twice, in 2010 and 2017. LDU Quito (2009 and 2023), Athletico Paranaense (2018 and 2021) and Independiente del Valle (2019 and 2022) have done likewise. The group of two-time winners is completed by Lanús, who joined this select list in 2025 after claiming their second title by beating Atlético Mineiro on penalties. The Granate had first lifted the trophy in 2013.
Three Finals: Lanús and Atlético Nacional lead the way
Boca Juniors will join Lanús and Atlético Nacional at the top of the list of clubs with the most Final appearances, with all three having reached the decider on three occasions.
The Argentine side featured in the Finals of 2013, 2020 and 2025, winning two titles and finishing runners-up once. The Colombian team, meanwhile, reached the Finals in 2002, 2014 and 2016, but have yet to lift the trophy. This year's Final will also carry special significance for Atlético Mineiro: after finishing runners-up to Lanús in 2025, they will return to the decider with another opportunity to win the competition for the first time.
Argentina lead the all-time honours list by country
Argentina are the most successful country in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, with 11 titles. Brazil are second with five, while Ecuador complete the top three with four. Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Peru have each won the competition once.
The breakdown of titles by country is as follows: Argentina (11); Brazil (5); Ecuador (4); Colombia, Mexico, Chile and Peru (1 each).
What could change in the Final
If Boca Juniors are crowned champions, they will claim their third title and become the first club to achieve that feat since the competition was created. They would move clear of the other five two-time winners and take sole possession of top spot in the all-time honours list. It would also take Argentina's tally to 12 titles, extending their lead over Brazil.
If Atlético Mineiro lift the trophy, they will claim their first title and take Brazil's total to six CONMEBOL Sudamericana crowns, moving the country closer to Argentina in the all-time national rankings. The Final, then, offers two possible historic outcomes: a new record for Boca or a maiden triumph for the Brazilian side.
