On the pitch are three illustrious names from "Los Profesores," the forward line that revolutionized Argentine football in the early 1930s: Miguel Lauri and Manuel Ferreira from the start, Alberto Zozaya in the second half. The 'Timão' won 1-0 with a goal from Teixeirinha. Ninety years later, those two clubs that shook hands in a stadium that is now a training ground will do something they never did in nine decades: face each other in the CONMEBOL Libertadores.
That is the fact that makes Estudiantes-Corinthians a rarity in the quarterfinal bracket. Two continental giants — four CONMEBOL Libertadores titles for the 'Pincha,' one for the 'Timão' — who have crossed paths only a handful of times in history, and never with La Gloria Eterna at stake. The 2026 meeting will be the first.
Their shared history is short but full of winks. After that afternoon in 1936, 73 years passed before the second chapter, and it was another afternoon with an unusual sense of occasion: on January 17, 2009, at the Pacaembu, Corinthians thrashed Estudiantes 5-1 in a friendly that Brazilian football remembers for something else. That day, the São Paulo club unveiled Ronaldo, 'O Fenômeno,' who was not yet fit to play and watched from the sidelines, cheered by a massive crowd. The only Estudiantes goal came from Mauricio Carrasco. What nobody knew then was that that well-beaten Estudiantes side, coached by Leonardo Astrada, was months away from a metamorphosis: Alejandro Sabella would arrive and, before the year was out, the 'Pincha' would lift their fourth Libertadores.
The only official precedent is much more recent and is still mourned in La Plata. Quarterfinals of the 2023 CONMEBOL Sudamericana: Corinthians won the first leg 1-0 in Brazil, Estudiantes won the return leg at UNO and forced penalties, and in the shootout it was the visitors who celebrated. That elimination on home soil was filed away as a thorn — the kind you only pull out with another tie. Three years later, the draw has put it back on the table, now with a bigger prize in the background: a place among the final four in the race for La Gloria Eterna.
Both arrive with hot streaks of their own. Corinthians knocked out Rosario Central on a night of character: a red card 10 minutes into the second half, a man down for more than half an hour, and a 79th-minute goal from Breno Bidon to win the tie with ten men. Estudiantes, coached by Alexander Medina, settled their tie against Universidad Católica with authority and with their heavyweights firing: Guido Carrillo, the home-grown captain who returned from Europe, and Tiago Palacios on the scoresheet, and Fernando Muslera — at 40 — guarding a goal that does not fall easily.
There is also a curious mirror between the two projects. Both clubs bet on mystique over big names: Corinthians built their qualification on the grit of their home crowd and a battling identity that has been their trademark since the 2012 CONMEBOL Libertadores, won without losing a single match; Estudiantes turned the Copa into a family religion, that "club of total mystique" their coach spoke of, where the word "Libertadores" has been pronounced differently since the days of Osvaldo Zubeldía.
For the neutral fan, the series offers a contrast of styles and histories with an open ending. For the two protagonists, something more intimate: the 'Timão' defend their status as recent executioners; and the 'Pincha' chase their fifth continental crown, with the chance to settle, in the big tournament, the debt from their previous duels.
It took football ninety years to give this matchup the stage it deserved. What began with a tour by ship, three Profesores and a goal from Teixeirinha will now be decided over 180 minutes for a ticket to the semifinals.
