The 'Charrúa' side showed quality and, above all, character to overturn a demanding tie that had begun with them at a disadvantage following their 2-0 defeat in Cusco. A 3-0 victory in Montevideo put the 'ciudadanos' among the last four in the continent. They will face Atlético Mineiro in the next round after the Brazilian side eliminated Santos in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.
Cienciano issued the first warning after just three minutes, using the same formula that had served them so well in Cusco: the high press. Neri Bandiera collected the ball after a series of ricochets on the edge of the box, but his effort was kept out by Franco Torgnascioli, the home side's goalkeeper.
Marcelo Méndez's side created their first opportunity in the 18th minute. Franco Pizzichillo, the key figure in the Uruguayan midfield, reached the byline and shot under pressure from Marcos Martinich. The deflection off the Argentine defender wrong-footed Ítalo Espinoza, but the goalkeeper reacted instinctively to keep the ball out.
It was Martinich who then came close to opening the scoring with a precise long-range free-kick. The full-back, who had scored from distance in the 6-1 win over Botafogo in Peru, unleashed a powerful effort that forced Torgnascioli into action, with the goalkeeper just managing to turn the ball behind for a corner.
With half-time approaching and the pressure to reduce the deficit as quickly as possible mounting, Salomón Rodríguez gave City Torque hope with the opening goal. The Uruguayan forward received a precise pass from Kevin Silva following a cross from Pizzichillo and placed his effort into the far corner to score his sixth goal of the current CONMEBOL Sudamericana campaign.
Méndez made changes at the break, bringing Nahuel Da Silva on for Luka Andrade, and the response was not only tactical but also one of attitude. City Torque pushed further up the pitch and began to threaten with every attack.
First came a Gonzalo Montes free-kick that sent Espinoza flying to his left to keep the ball out. The second attempt resulted in another celebration for the 'Charrúa' side: Esteban Obregón raced down the left and picked out Salomón Rodríguez with a deep cross. The forward headed the ball into the net, going against the goalkeeper's movement, to make it 2-0.
The aggregate equaliser stirred the pride of the Cusco side, who gradually began to grow into the game. Bandiera, after an outstanding individual move, struck from the edge of the box, but a deflection off Silva proved crucial in preventing Cienciano from pulling one back.
Two minutes from time, after relentless pressure throughout the second half, City Torque found a third goal to send the crowd at the Estadio Centenario into raptures. Da Silva, the game's game-changing factor, made a run into space after Rodríguez's header and calmly finished one-on-one against Espinoza to make it 3-0 and seal a historic place in the semi-finals.
