The header at the far post against Universidad Central was more than just another goal. It was a reminder that, when the stage is an international cup competition, Gabriel Barbosa speaks a language of his own. Santos’ leading scorer in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana with four goals, the forward guided El Peixe into the Round of 16 with the ease of a player who has spent a decade making continental nights his natural habitat. Now he is chasing something still missing from his collection: La Gran Conquista, the only major CONMEBOL club title absent from his trophy cabinet.
‘Gabigol’s’ numbers in the CONMEBOL Libertadores are the stuff of legend. With 31 goals, he is the highest-scoring Brazilian in the history of the tournament and sits joint-fourth on the all-time list alongside Daniel Onega and Miguel Borja, behind only Alberto Spencer (54), Fernando Morena (37) and Pedro Rocha (37). He finished as the competition’s top scorer in 2019, with nine goals, and again in 2021, with 11, both times wearing the Flamengo shirt. He also left his mark with one of the tournament’s most iconic moments: a late brace in the 2019 final in Lima against River Plate, overturning what had seemed a certain outcome and crowning Mengão champions.
His relationship with finals deserves a chapter of its own. He scored twice in the Peruvian capital, found the net in the 2021 decider despite the defeat to Palmeiras, and struck the only goal in the 2022 triumph over Athletico Paranaense in Guayaquil. Four goals in La Gloria Eterna finals: he drew level with Zico, surpassed Pelé and moved within one of Coutinho, Santos’ legendary center-forward, while also becoming the first Brazilian to score in three different finals of the competition. Another statistic captures his impact perfectly: in the 22 Libertadores matches in which he has scored, his team has lost just once.
He built all of that after returning to his home country and continent. In Europe, where he moved at a young age after his first spell with Santos, the story was very different: between Inter Milan and Benfica, he played just over 300 minutes across a season and a half. His return home transformed him into the cup predator Europe never truly got to see: alongside his two CONMEBOL Libertadores titles, he also added the 2020 CONMEBOL Recopa, once again scoring in the decisive match at the Maracanã.
The CONMEBOL Sudamericana, however, remains unfinished business. His only previous experience was brief: with Cruzeiro in 2025, he was eliminated in the Group Stage. The territory is so unfamiliar that the tie against Universidad Central was the first knockout round of the competition in his entire career, and his response was immediate: a goal and qualification. The pursuit is also a shared one. Santos, the club where he made his debut and to which he returned in January 2026, have never won this trophy either, with the quarterfinals standing as their best-ever finish. The idol and his home club are chasing the same crown together, while the striker also closes in on a personal milestone: his next goal will be his 100th in a Peixe shirt.
The journey continues in the Round of 16 against Macará, the surprise unbeaten winners of Group A, with the first leg in Brazil between August 11 and 13 and the return leg in Ambato a week later. Further down the road, the single-match final in Barranquilla on November 21 looms on the horizon. ‘Gabigol’ has already ruled La Gloria Eterna like few others; now he wants to complete the collection. And his story has shown that, whenever there is a trophy at stake, he is one player you should never take your eyes off.
