Four remain in the race for ‘The Great Conquest’: CONMEBOL Sudamericana Semi-finals are set

Scarpa celebra la clasificación de Atletico Mineiro
  • Boca Juniors-Vasco da Gama and Atlético Mineiro-Montevideo City Torque will be the two CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2026 Semi-final ties.

  • Brazil will have two representatives in the next round, while Argentina and Uruguay will each have one.

The CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2026 now has its four remaining contenders for ‘The Great Conquest’. The Quarter-final second legs produced comebacks, late goals and a penalty shootout in which a goalkeeper took centre stage. Boca Juniors, Vasco da Gama, Atlético Mineiro and Montevideo City Torque came through their respective ties and are now one step away from the decisive match.

The Semi-final line-up combines continental pedigree with new ambitions: the two-time champions from Argentina, the Rio de Janeiro side, the reigning runners-up and a Uruguayan team continuing to push the boundaries of their own history will all be aiming to reach the Final on 21 November in Barranquilla.

São Paulo 1-1 Boca Juniors (1-2 on aggregate)

Boca Juniors made the most of the advantage earned at ‘La Bombonera’ and secured their place in the next round with a 1-1 draw against São Paulo at the MorumBIS. After winning the first leg 1-0, ‘El Xeneize’ found a key contributor in Leandro Lozano: the Uruguayan right-back surged forward down his flank and opened the scoring in the 60th minute to extend Boca’s aggregate lead.

São Paulo responded late on through a Domingos Duarte header, but the equaliser was not enough to change the outcome. Boca held on for a 2-1 aggregate victory and once again came through a continental tie on Brazilian soil. They will now face another Brazilian opponent, with Vasco da Gama standing between them and a place in the Final.

Vasco da Gama 2-0 Independiente Santa Fe (2-0 on aggregate)

Vasco da Gama made home advantage count to settle a tie that had begun with a goalless draw in Bogotá. The Brazilian side defeated Independiente Santa Fe 2-0 at São Januário, with goals from Bruno Duarte and David, to secure their place in the last four.

Léo Jardim made an important save from Hugo Rodallega before Bruno Duarte opened the scoring in the first half. After the break, David came off the bench and doubled the advantage by converting a cross from José Luis Rodríguez. With that cushion, Vasco controlled the closing stages and sealed a 2-0 aggregate victory that sets up a Semi-final meeting with Boca Juniors.

Atlético Mineiro 4-2 Santos (4-4 on aggregate, 3-1 on penalties)

Atlético Mineiro needed a six-goal thriller and a penalty shootout to overcome Santos. After losing the first leg 2-0, ‘Galo’ won 4-2 at the Arena MRV, with a goal from Bernard, a Reinier brace and a stoppage-time header from Tomás Cuello. Santos’ goals —an own goal by Lyanco and a strike from Gabriel Barbosa— forced the hosts to keep pushing until the end to make it 4-4 on aggregate.

Cuello delivered when qualification appeared to be slipping away, before Gabriel Delfim completed the job from the goal. Everson’s replacement saved penalties from Gabigol, João Schmidt and Arthur Melo to lead Mineiro to a 3-1 shootout victory. The reigning runners-up therefore kept alive their hopes of reaching another Final and will face Montevideo City Torque in the next round.

Montevideo City Torque 3-0 Cienciano (3-2 on aggregate)

Montevideo City Torque produced one of the great nights of their international journey. Marcelo Méndez’s side entered the second leg trailing by two goals after their defeat in Cusco, but beat Cienciano 3-0 at the Estadio Centenario to reach the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Semi-finals for the first time.

Salomón Rodríguez led the comeback with a brace: he opened the scoring before half-time and headed home in the second half to level the tie. Late on, Nahuel Da Silva latched onto a pass from Rodríguez himself and finished past the goalkeeper to complete the comeback. The 3-2 aggregate victory extended the ‘Ciudadano’s’ best-ever continental campaign, and they will now face Atlético Mineiro for a place in the Final.
