Independiente del Valle, the club from Sangolquí in the Los Chillos valley east of Quito, has built one of the continent’s most admired youth-development models in less than two decades: an academy, a methodology and a philosophy that transformed a neighborhood club — founded in 1958 and relaunched as a project in 2007 under Michel Deller’s leadership — into a powerhouse that develops talent, exports players and, as if that were not enough, wins trophies.
The list of graduates is remarkable. Moisés Caicedo came through the club’s academy and, in 2023, became one of the most expensive signings in British football history following his move to Chelsea. Willian Pacho went on to become a two-time UEFA Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain. Piero Hincapié, now at Arsenal, is thriving at the highest level of European football. Kendry Páez, the latest jewel produced by the academy, has already signed a contract with Chelsea. One image perfectly captures the scale of the phenomenon: in the 2025/26 season, two players developed in Sangolquí, Pacho and Hincapié, faced each other in a Champions League final. Few clubs anywhere in the world can boast a credential like that.
Amid all that success, the Ecuadorian side is still chasing one final objective: lifting the CONMEBOL Libertadores. Independiente del Valle won the CONMEBOL Sudamericana in 2019 — defeating Colón de Santa Fe 3-1 in Asunción — and again in 2022, with a 2-0 victory over São Paulo in Córdoba. They then added the 2023 CONMEBOL Recopa after beating Flamengo on penalties at the Maracanã. Over the past decade, no Ecuadorian club has enjoyed greater success on the continental stage. The CONMEBOL Libertadores remains the one prize still missing: their closest attempt came in 2016, when they reached the final after eliminating Boca Juniors and River Plate, only to fall to Atlético Nacional.
Their current campaign finds them on the rise once again. In the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores, with Uruguayan coach Joaquín Papa in charge, Independiente del Valle finished top of their group with 13 points and secured first place on the final matchday with a 1-0 victory over Rosario Central. As always, the squad blends experience with youth: established figures such as Junior Sornoza and Jordy Alcívar are joined by the latest prospects emerging from an academy that continues to produce talent in abundance — the next generation from a factory that never stops.
In the Round of 16, the opposition will be Deportes Tolima. The ‘Vinotinto y Oro’ from Ibagué, founded in 1954 and three-time champions of Colombian football, are the last remaining representatives of their country in the competition and arrive with plenty of pedigree. They are an intense side with attacking quality in players such as Luis Sandoval and Jáder Valencia, and with ambitions of pulling off an upset against one of the tournament’s understated contenders. For Independiente del Valle, it will be a demanding test from the outset against opponents who will give them nothing for free.
The tie will begin on Tuesday, August 11 in Ibagué, with Tolima at home, and will be decided on Tuesday, August 18 in Ecuador, at the home of the ‘Matagigantes’. Independiente del Valle know that their place in history is already secure because of everything they have contributed to South American football: every star they export adds another signature to their honorary status as the continent’s football university. But the biggest diploma is still missing. And in this Round of 16, the club from Sangolquí will once again try to turn unfinished business into the triumph that would change their story forever.
