Corinthians once again relied on one of the strengths that had served them best at the start of the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores. At a packed Gigante de Arroyito, where the home crowd pushed Rosario Central forward for much of the night, Fernando Diniz’s side withstood the hosts’ pressure, preserved the 0-0 draw even after being reduced to ten men and took the Round of 16 tie back to São Paulo for the decisive second leg.
Defensive resilience is nothing new for the Timão, and it is a quality Diniz has increasingly incorporated into his teams in recent years. Their continental campaign had begun with three consecutive 2-0 victories, against Platense, Independiente Santa Fe and Peñarol, without conceding a goal in the opening three Group Stage matches. In Rosario, Corinthians needed to rediscover that version of themselves against an opponent that enjoyed more possession and gradually pushed higher up the pitch as the match wore on.
Rosario Central took control through possession and looked to increase the tempo whenever Ángel Di María and Jáminton Campaz found space to receive in the opposition half. The Colombian tested Hugo Souza from distance during the first half, while Jorge Almirón’s side also sought to threaten from set pieces, an avenue they repeatedly turned to throughout the night. Corinthians remained compact, with Raniele playing an important role in front of the centre-backs and helping to limit the space around Souza’s goal.
The clearest chance of the first half, however, fell to the Brazilian side. Shortly before the break, Matheus Bidu found himself inside the box following a set-piece situation and came close to breaking the deadlock. It was a reflection of the visitors’ game plan: even without controlling the match territorially, Corinthians were capable of posing a threat whenever they managed to beat Rosario Central’s initial press.
The balance tilted even further towards Rosario Central after the interval. The hosts pushed their defensive line higher, Di María became increasingly involved and Corinthians spent more and more time defending close to their own penalty area. The numbers reflected that pattern: the Argentine side finished with 57% possession, produced 16 of the match’s 21 shots and took all 12 corners. Their territorial superiority, however, did not translate into the goal the crowd at Arroyito was waiting for.
The challenge for Diniz’s side increased in the 35th minute of the second half, when Allan received his second yellow card and left Corinthians down to ten men. Rosario Central then had the closing minutes to try to break the Brazilian resistance. Di María produced one of the hosts’ most dangerous attempts shortly afterwards and Central continued to load the penalty area until the final whistle, but Hugo Souza and the visitors’ defensive unit managed to keep a clean sheet.
The draw left everything open. Rosario Central were unable to claim the reward they had sought for much of the match, while Corinthians returned to São Paulo having rediscovered a quality that had been fundamental at the start of their continental campaign. Next Thursday, August 20, at the Neo Química Arena, there will be no margin for error: the winner will advance to the Quarterfinals, while another draw will send the tie to penalties.
