- As in the Group Stage, Cerro Porteño once again proved a difficult side to beat on Brazilian soil.
- Palmeiras recovered from a sending-off and managed to take the lead, but ultimately conceded the equaliser in the closing stages.
Palmeiras and Cerro Porteño once again played out a closely contested and emotional encounter. The Brazilian side created the better chances for much of the night and even managed to take the lead while playing with ten men, but Paraguay’s ‘Ciclón’ kept pushing until the very end and found a 1-1 equaliser in stoppage time to leave Brazil with a valuable result.
The hosts came out determined to impose themselves and came close to opening the scoring after just two minutes. Vitor Roque made a run in behind the defence and finished past Manuel Roffo, but young defender Lucas Quintana appeared on the line to keep the ball out. Cerro responded shortly afterwards through Cecilio Domínguez, their biggest attacking threat in the opening stages, although he lost his footing as he moved towards a one-on-one with Carlos Miguel.
Palmeiras then began to find a recurring route of attack down the right through Allan. The winger received the ball out wide, cut inside and repeatedly tested the goalkeeper with his left foot. Manuel Roffo answered every attempt and quickly established himself as one of the standout performers of the first half. He was called into action again in the 30th minute, when Vitor Roque found himself through on goal after a series of rebounds, but the goalkeeper reacted sharply from close range to preserve the clean sheet.
The ‘Verdão’s’ attacking play also relied on the movement of their two forwards. Vitor Roque more frequently operated as the central reference point, while José Manuel López dropped a few metres deeper to become involved in the build-up and open up spaces. Palmeiras continued to create chances, but Cerro Porteño remained compact and always seemed to find a defensive answer to preserve the deadlock.
The Brazilian pressure continued after the break. Jhon Arias went close with a powerful strike from the edge of the area that crashed against the right-hand post and, just a few minutes later, had another excellent opportunity following a superb move by Allan down the right. The low cross flashed across the box, Vitor Roque was unable to get a touch and Arias arrived at the far post, but sent his left-footed effort wide.
Cerro Porteño also began to find spaces and forced Carlos Miguel into action with a powerful long-range effort from Bobadilla. In the 25th minute, they even thought they had taken the lead: Benítez kept alive a move that appeared to be over, regained possession inside the area and finished past the Brazilian goalkeeper, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The course of the match changed three minutes later when Andreas Pereira was sent off for striking an opponent. Palmeiras were reduced to ten men and Cerro appeared to be entering their strongest spell of the night, but it was precisely then that Abel Ferreira’s side managed to break the deadlock. Murilo Cerqueira advanced down the right and delivered a cross, Marlon Freitas won the header and ‘Flaco’ López arrived at the far post to turn the ball home and spark the celebrations in the 36th minute of the second half.
The Argentine forward left the pitch to a standing ovation, but Cerro Porteño refused to give up. In stoppage time, Morel went close with a header that flashed just wide of the right-hand post, and the Paraguayan side kept loading the box until they finally got their reward. In the 49th minute, an inswinging cross from the right took an awkward trajectory; Pablo Vegetti tried to get a touch but failed to make contact, and the ball slipped underneath Carlos Miguel to make it 1-1.
As had already happened during the Group Stage, Cerro Porteño once again showed in Brazil that they could compete on equal terms with Palmeiras. ‘Verdão’ came close to securing a hard-earned victory despite being a man down, but ‘Ciclón’ kept pushing until the very last action and earned a draw that leaves the tie completely open.
The match in numbers
- Cerro Porteño became the fifth team to face Palmeiras twice away from home in the same edition of the CONMEBOL Libertadores and the first to collect four points from those matches (1W 1D). The only previous side to remain unbeaten in both was Boca Juniors in 2018 (2D).
- Cerro Porteño scored in the 90th minute of a CONMEBOL Libertadores knockout-stage match for only the second time, after Dida did so away to Cobreloa in the 1993 Round of 16 to seal a 2-0 victory.
- Only Álex Arce (8) has been directly involved in more goals than Palmeiras’ José López (7) in the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores, with three goals and four assists. Since 2013, only two other Palmeiras players have recorded at least three goals and three assists in a single edition: Raphael Veiga (2023) and Rony (2023 and 2020).
- Allan (Palmeiras) registered the most shots in a single CONMEBOL Libertadores match of his career (6). He is among the three players with the most attempts in the 2026 edition since the Group Stage, with 20 in total.
- Cerro Porteño named two players under the age of 20 in their starting XI against Palmeiras: Marcelo Chaparro and Cesar Bobadilla. It was the first time ‘Ciclón’ had done so in the knockout stages of the CONMEBOL Libertadores since the 2003 Round of 16 against Independiente Medellín, when Edgar Barreto and Dante López started.
