When Flamengo released their lineup, shortly before the match, Bruno Henrique had a place in the starting eleven and Pedro was on the bench. Leonardo Jardim's plan for the altitude of Quito had a specific man to carry it out: the 35-year-old striker came into Thursday night's clash with a track record above 2,000 meters to back him up, and the Portuguese coach prioritized his legs. Two hours later, at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, Bruno Henrique turned his team's first shot on target into the goal that opened the 2-0 win over Independiente del Valle in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarterfinals.
The goal summed up what the coach was looking for. Jorginho drove through the middle, found Samuel Lino on the left flank, and Bruno Henrique finished the cross at the far post with his right foot, 16 minutes into the second half, after a first half in which Flamengo had not tested the goalkeeper. According to Opta, it was the clearest chance of the night: 0.61 expected goals, more than any of the hosts' 18 attempts. The striker went off with five minutes to go, job done, replaced by none other than Pedro.
It was his fifth goal of the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores, which sees Bruno Henrique match his 2019 tally, the year of his first Copa title with Flamengo, and sit behind only the six he scored in 2021. It is, in short, the second-most prolific season of his career in the competition, at 35 and in a squad packed with stars in which he has to fight for a place.
Altitude, moreover, is nothing new to him. His numbers above 2,000 meters speak for themselves: nine matches, three goals and one assist, with goals against Liga de Quito in 2019 and 2021, both in the Ecuadorian capital, and against Cusco this year, at 3,350 meters. Thursday's was his fourth goal at altitude and his third in Quito.
After the match, Jardim preferred to talk about the team rather than individual names. "In the first half we had difficulties, because of the game, the altitude, the speed of the ball, but mainly because of the dynamics," he acknowledged at the press conference. "In the second half we said the opponent would drop the intensity a little and we would have a bit more of the ball. We ended up being superior in the second half, we scored both goals deservedly. We took an important step, not a decisive one, in the tie," the Portuguese coach said.
The historical context gives the win another dimension. Independiente del Valle and Flamengo had met six times in CONMEBOL competitions and the home side had never lost: they had won two and drawn one, including the 5-0 in the 2020 group stage, the biggest win in their history in the Copa. On Thursday, for the first time, the visitors won.
And Flamengo, for their part, ended a run of seven knockout matches without an away win outside Brazil in CONMEBOL competitions, with two draws and five defeats: their last victory on foreign soil in a knockout tie had been the 4-0 against Vélez in the semifinals of the 2022 CONMEBOL Libertadores. Only five visiting teams have beaten Independiente del Valle in CONMEBOL competitions, and three of them are Brazilian: Palmeiras, Red Bull Bragantino and, now, Flamengo.
The tie will be decided next week in Rio de Janeiro, and the 'Matagigantes' need to win by two goals to force penalties and by three to go through. Flamengo head home with the advantage, nine matches unbeaten in this edition and the certainty that the Quito gamble paid off.
