Quito was unfinished business. In six meetings between Independiente del Valle and Flamengo in CONMEBOL competitions, the home side had never lost, and the 'Mengão' carried a 0-5 defeat in 2020 as the most painful memory of their visits to Ecuador. On Thursday, in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarterfinals, the defending champions broke that pattern with a 2-0 win at the Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa, built on two shots on target and a touch of class that showed up exactly when the match demanded it.
The first half belonged to the 'Rayo'. With the same eleven that had knocked out Deportes Tolima, Joaquín Papa's side controlled the ball, pushed Flamengo back into their own box and racked up ten shots to none for their opponents. The clearest chance came in the 20th minute: a cross from the right, Carlos 'Cocoliso' González hit it first time and the ball struck the left-hand post with Agustín Rossi already beaten. It summed up 45 minutes in which the hosts did everything but score, and from which Flamengo emerged unscathed without a single shot on target.
González did not return for the second half, replaced by Djorkaeff Reasco at the break, and the match changed hands without changing its script. Independiente del Valle kept the ball; Flamengo kept the precision. Sixteen minutes into the second half, Jorginho drove through the middle and threaded a surgical pass to Samuel Lino, who received on the left flank and delivered a pinpoint cross to the far post. There was Bruno Henrique, the man Leonardo Jardim chose over Pedro to lead the attack at altitude, to finish with his right foot. Flamengo's first shot on target: a goal.
The second came 30 minutes into the second half and had an unexpected scorer. Emerson Royal sent in a cross from the right and Léo Pereira, the center-back, headed home unmarked in the middle of the box for 2-0. By then, Jardim had already freshened up the midfield with Lucas Paquetá for Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Gonzalo Plata for Jorge Carrascal, and Papa had turned to Ronald Briones and Matías Perelló, the two who had settled the Tolima tie off the bench. This time it wasn't enough. Pedro, who had started on the bench, came on 40 minutes into the second half for Bruno Henrique to close out the night.
The final numbers tell the whole story: Independiente del Valle had 18 shots, three on target, and hit the post once; Flamengo had four shots, two on target, and both ended up in the net. The 'Rayo' saw their run of five straight home wins and four overall in the CONMEBOL Libertadores come to an end, while Jardim's side stretched their unbeaten run in this edition to nine matches.
The tie will be decided next week in Rio de Janeiro, with Flamengo two goals up and Independiente del Valle needing to win by two to force penalties and by three to reach the semifinals.

Independiente del Valle are only the third team to keep Flamengo without a shot in the first half of a CONMEBOL competition match since 2013, after Talleres in the 2022 CONMEBOL Libertadores and Palestino in the 2016 CONMEBOL Sudamericana. The Rubro-Negro had not gone more than 20 minutes without a shot in any match of the current edition of the Copa.
Bruno Henrique (Flamengo) scored his fifth goal of the 2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores. It is the second-most prolific season of his career in the competition, level with 2019 (5 goals) and behind only 2021 (6 goals).
Flamengo ended a run of seven knockout matches without an away win outside Brazil in CONMEBOL competitions (2D 5L). Their last away victory on foreign soil had come in the semifinals of the 2022 CONMEBOL Libertadores (4-0 against Vélez).
Flamengo had just four shots to Independiente del Valle's 18. However, the best chances of the match belonged to the Rubro-Negro according to Opta's expected goals model: the goals by Bruno Henrique (0.61 xG) and Léo Pereira (0.31 xG). The Ecuadorian side's best opportunity was a shot by Hugo Quintana in the 67th minute (0.20 xG).
Of the five visiting teams that have beaten Independiente del Valle in CONMEBOL competitions, three are Brazilian: Palmeiras (2021 and 2024 CONMEBOL Libertadores), Red Bull Bragantino (2021 CONMEBOL Sudamericana) and Flamengo (2026 CONMEBOL Libertadores).
