In the 18th minute, Léo Jardim produced an extraordinary save to keep his side's goal intact. Showing pure reflexes after a series of ricochets, he kept out a powerful close-range effort from Hugo Rodallega. Minutes later, the Colombian captain threatened the Brazilian goalkeeper once again with a well-struck free-kick that went narrowly wide.
During Pablo Repetto's side's strongest spell, Vasco da Gama found relief with a perfectly worked move. In the 37th minute, Adson won the ball back with a high press and laid it off to Alan Saldivia. The centre-back surged forward and turned provider, finding Bruno Duarte, who tapped home from close range to beat Andrés Mosquera with the hosts' first clear chance.
The second half saw Independiente Santa Fe commit players forward in search of an equaliser. Vasco responded by dropping deeper and looking to counter-attack. From that approach, the Portuguese manager Pedro Emanuel's side came close to extending their lead: Adson carried the ball out from his own half before laying it off to Ramón Rique, whose powerful effort was kept out by Mosquera, giving the visitors another lifeline.
The right side of the Rio de Janeiro side's attack proved to be the most decisive area. The same channel produced Vasco's second goal in the 62nd minute. Uruguayan José Luis Rodríguez drove forward, reached the byline and delivered a precise cross for David — who had come on three minutes earlier — to lose his marker and head home for 2-0.
Vasco da Gama closed down the spaces as Independiente Santa Fe pushed forward, with their back line and its individual members emerging as the standout performers of the match. The Rio de Janeiro side saw out the game without taking further risks, secured their place in the semi-finals and will face the winner of the Boca Juniors v São Paulo tie at that stage.
