Santos beat Macará 2-1 at Vila Belmiro before holding out for a goalless draw at altitude in Ambato to book their place in the last eight. On a night when they failed to register a single shot on target, Cuca opted for a heavily rotated side featuring several youngsters, with neither Neymar nor Gabriel Barbosa in the squad. The team had reached the Round of 16 after scoring eight goals across their Playoff tie against Universidad Central, and 'Gabigol', with five goals in continental competition this season and a run of four consecutive matches scoring in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, remains their main attacking reference point. Neymar, with two goals and two assists in five appearances, is the other major question mark heading into the tie.

Atlético Mineiro eliminated Red Bull Bragantino with a 1-0 win in Bragança Paulista and a 2-2 draw at the Arena MRV, where they had to come from behind twice: Eric Ramires and Eduardo Sasha put the visitors ahead, Maycon equalised and Tomás Cuello, in the third minute of added time, secured qualification. Eduardo Domínguez's side extended a record that sets them apart in the competition: they have never lost a knockout tie after winning the first leg away from home. Bernard, with three goals, and Cuello, with four assists, provide the attacking spark.
The tie also brings a personal reunion on the touchlines: Cuca, who led the 'Galo' to the 2013 CONMEBOL Libertadores title, now manages Santos as they attempt to eliminate the club that helped make his name. There is also a historical first for the 'Peixe': this is the first time they have faced a fellow Brazilian side from the quarter-finals onwards in this competition.
The tie is about to begin: the winner on aggregate will advance to the semi-finals; if the scores are level after the two legs, the tie will be decided on penalties. The second leg will be played in Belo Horizonte next week.
