Independiente Santa Fe honoured their history. El León beat Caracas 2-0 at the Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 play-offs, moving one step closer to preserving a proud tradition: they have never lost a continental knockout tie against Venezuelan opposition.
With goals from club icon Hugo Rodallega and substitute Franco Fagúndez, Pablo Repetto’s side took the first step towards a high-profile contest, with River Plate awaiting the winners in the Round of 16.
The hosts dominated from start to finish against a Caracas side that sat deep and looked to counter-attack, but never managed to create any clear danger. The Venezuelan team, who arrived on the back of the longest unbeaten away run in their continental history, barely threatened Andrés Mosquera’s goal throughout the 90 minutes.
The standout performer was the great ‘Hugol’ Rodallega. After 30 minutes, the Colombian striker — who will turn 41 in two days — received the ball following a fine passing move, set himself on the edge of the penalty area and fired a left-footed shot across goal that nestled just inside Frankarlos Benítez’s right-hand post. It was a finish of pure class and further proof that age has done nothing to diminish his enduring quality.
Forced to push forward, Caracas left spaces behind and Santa Fe took advantage late on, with their coach’s substitutions making the difference. Repetto turned to his bench and received an immediate response: in the 84th minute, Christian Mafla — who had come on only moments earlier — cut the ball back for Uruguay’s Franco Fagúndez, who finished first time to make it 2-0. It was also the first touch of the match for the Uruguayan, who came on and put the contest beyond doubt.
El León kept the dangerous Wilfred Correa under control. The forward had scored three goals from just nine shots on target in the group stage — a 33 per cent conversion rate — but was substituted after 66 minutes without having threatened the goal. Caracas had opened the scoring in five of their six group-stage matches, but on this occasion they never found a way through.
The tie will remain open until Thursday 30 July, when Caracas host Santa Fe at the Estadio Olímpico de la UCV in Venezuela. El León will travel with their first-leg advantage and an even greater prize on the horizon: the winners will face Group H winners River Plate in the Round of 16 of La Gran Conquista.
