Leonardo César Jardim discovered at the age of seven that he wanted to pull on the gloves and become a goalkeeper, inspired by Marcos — the man between the posts who guided Brazil to their fifth World Cup title in South Korea and Japan in 2002 — whom he regarded as his childhood idol. More than 24 years later, Vasco da Gama's No. 1 is one of the pillars of the Rio side's continental campaign, as they dream of lifting their first CONMEBOL Sudamericana trophy.
"I'm happy to be able to help the team in my own way, but the most important thing was the good performance the team put in. We played an intelligent game. Now we'll have to settle the tie at home," Jardim said after the 0-0 draw against Independiente Santa Fe in Bogotá in the first leg of the quarter-final tie.
The experienced goalkeeper, who has already made more than 200 appearances for the Rio side, was instrumental at El Campín in ensuring his team did not concede against Pablo Repetto's Uruguayan-managed side. With superb reflexes, and in the dying moments of the match, he emerged as the hero and standout performer with two stunning saves, first to deny Franco Fagúndez and then Hugo Rodallega.
With the French club, he made his UEFA Champions League debut, but was subsequently loaned to Boavista — on his return to Portuguese football — where he regained his rhythm before returning to Lille, establishing himself and eventually attracting Vasco da Gama's interest.
"Being in European football was a school for me and I learned a lot of things. I feel more prepared and experienced. It is an honour to be here because of Vasco's stature and the ambition of the project, which is very ambitious. Having the opportunity to be part of this club is something that moves any player," he said during his presentation as a 'Cruzmaltino' player in early 2023, after the club had avoided relegation.
His arrival in Rio de Janeiro proved to be a turning point in his career and the decisive step towards establishing himself as a leading figure. Three years later, and playing a prominent role in Portuguese manager Pedro Emanuel's system, Léo Jardim is chasing a dream he wants to turn into reality in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana and enter the club's pantheon of greats: becoming a champion with Vasco da Gama.
Con el conjunto galo hizo su presentación en la UEFA Champions League, pero fue cedido a préstamo al Boa Vista –en su retorno a la liga lusa– donde recuperó ritmo antes de retornar al Lille para afianzarse y que Vasco da Gama decidiera incorporarlo.
“Estar en el fútbol europeo fue una escuela y aprendí muchas cosas. Me siento más preparado y experimentado. Me halaga estar aquí por la grandeza de Vasco y por la grandeza del proyecto, que es muy ambicioso. Tener la oportunidad de formar parte de este club conmueve a cualquier jugador”, destacó en su presentación con la camiseta 'Cruzmaltina', a principios de 2023, luego de que el club se salvara del descenso.
Su llegada a Río de Janeiro fue un punto de inflexión en su carrera y el paso definitivo hacia su consagración como referente. Tres años más tarde, y con un rol preponderante en el esquema del portugués Pedro Emanuel, Léo Jardim persigue un sueño que quiere materializar en la CONMEBOL Sudamericana para entrar al Olimpo del club: ser campeón con Vasco da Gama.
