Independiente Santa Fe know what a happy ending in this competition looks like: they remain the only Colombian club to have lifted the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, after that memorable night at El Campín in 2015. Eleven years later, ‘León’ are roaring again after taking the long road through the tournament: they finished third in Group E of the CONMEBOL Libertadores, eliminated Caracas 5-0 on aggregate in the Playoffs and then came through one of the most demanding Round of 16 ties.
The first match against River ended 0-0 in Bogotá. Santa Fe created the more dangerous chances but were unable to break down the Argentine side, leaving the tie completely open ahead of the return leg at the Mâs Monumental. The draw also extended their run without conceding since entering the CONMEBOL Sudamericana.
The second leg once again produced a tie with little separating the teams. River and Santa Fe drew 1-1 and, with the aggregate score also level at 1-1, qualification had to be decided from the penalty spot. There, the Colombian side prevailed 8-7 to claim the final available place in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Quarter-finals.
Pablo Repetto’s side had already shown their ability to compete away from Bogotá with a 3-0 victory over Caracas in Venezuela, and they did so again in one of the continent’s most demanding venues. Experience, solidity and resilience continue to underpin a Santa Fe campaign built around the possibility of repeating their historic achievement from 2015.
Their next challenge will be Vasco da Gama, who eliminated Olimpia 4-1 on aggregate. ‘León’ have already overcome Caracas and River and now stand just one tie away from returning to the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Semi-finals, the stage from which they began building their historic title run eleven years ago.

The Uruguayan has become the man for decisive moments: four goals in international competition this year, including two in the tie against Caracas and the penalty that levelled the second leg against River Plate at the Mâs Monumental.
