The 'Cardenal' and the Brazilian side played out a goalless draw in the tie that opened the Great Conquest's quarter-finals. The tie will be decided next Tuesday at the Estádio São Januário in Rio de Janeiro. The winners will face the winners of the tie between Boca Juniors and São Paulo in the next round.
The two sides shared possession and chances in the first half. As the minutes went by, Vasco grew into the match and showed greater attacking intent, but the assuredness of Weimar Asprilla — the standout performer in the Round of 16 tie against River Plate — prevented the visitors from going into half-time ahead.
Eight minutes into the first half, following a precise delivery from the right, Iván Scarpeta rose highest and directed his header towards the far post, beyond the reach of Léo Jardim — the Brazilian side's goalkeeper — but the effort was ruled out for a marginal offside.
The Vasco goalkeeper then came close to opening the scoring in a surprising fashion: he launched a powerful kick from inside his own area and the ball almost found its way into Asprilla's goal, with the goalkeeper eventually turning it behind for a corner. From the resulting set piece, the side managed by Portuguese manager Pedro Emanuel threatened the hosts once again. Argentine striker Claudio Spinelli won the aerial duel, but Asprilla — once again — kept out his header.
Before the end of the opening 45 minutes, Santa Fe pushed forward with an excellent team move. Uruguayan Franco Fagúndez picked out Helibelton Palacios, who surged down the right, made good ground and wasted his effort after finding himself one-on-one with Jardim.
The second half began with greater physicality and a closely contested battle in midfield. The first clear chance fell to Spinelli. The striker latched on to a through ball and went one-on-one with Asprilla, who produced a heroic save to deny the Argentine.
The Colombian side responded with a dangerous attacking move. Fagúndez received the ball on the edge of the penalty area, skipped past fellow Uruguayan Alan Saldivia, struck it with his left foot and saw his effort crash against the crossbar.
Roared on by their home support and with Pablo Repetto introducing attacking changes, Santa Fe pushed further up the pitch. Ten minutes from time, Alexis Zapata tried his luck from distance but was denied by a good save from Léo Jardim.
The Brazilian goalkeeper turned hero in the dying moments with a stunning double save on pure reflex: first from Fagúndez's header and then, again with his head, from Rodallega. With the final action of the match, Vasco could have taken all three points back to Rio de Janeiro, but Bruno Duarte's effort went narrowly wide of the right-hand post of Asprilla's goal.
The opening leg of the tie produced a half for each side. The series will be decided in Rio de Janeiro next week, at São Januário.
