Tigre made an emphatic statement as the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana resumed, beating Nacional 3-0 at the Gran Parque Central in the first leg of the Round of 16 play-offs. They will now decide the tie at home with a commanding advantage. On a rainy night in Montevideo, Diego Dabove’s side struck early, doubled their lead before half-time and rounded off the victory with a superb goal after the break.
The first warning came just two minutes into the match and straight from the training ground. Gonzalo Martínez delivered a set-piece into the box, Alan Barrionuevo headed it down and Jalil Elías finished with his right foot. The goal highlighted one of El Matador’s main strengths during the group stage, when half of their goals came from set-piece situations.
The early blow heightened concerns within the Nacional camp. Having lost in the Uruguayan league on Friday, they were unable to find a response. Tigre, by contrast, looked sharp despite their lack of competitive action: the match in Montevideo was only their second official fixture of the semester, following their Copa Argentina defeat by Independiente Rivadavia.
Not even Bruno Leyes’ injury disrupted the visitors’ game plan. He was forced off after 25 minutes with a problem in his right shoulder, but his replacement, Martín Garay, went on to play a key role. In the third minute of first-half stoppage time, he found Ignacio Russo, who unleashed a powerful angled strike from the right corner of the penalty area to make it 2-0.
Jorge Bava tried to spark a response with three changes at half-time, including the withdrawal of captain Coates, but the second half brought further problems. Four minutes after the restart, Bruno Zuculini — making his first appearance in the competition for Nacional — was shown a second yellow card, reducing the hosts to ten men. With the numerical advantage, Tigre managed their lead comfortably, while Nacional threatened only through a handful of crosses that Felipe Zenobio dealt with confidently.
There was still time for one more work of art. Elías Cabrera, who had come on for Martínez, collected a pass from Moreno and unleashed a left-footed strike from outside the box that flew inside the right post of Alexis Martín Arias’ goal, beyond the goalkeeper’s reach despite his full-stretch dive. El Matador’s substitutes had now played a direct role in two of the goals on the night.
The performance capped a special occasion for Tigre, who paid tribute before the match to the Argentina national team, runners-up at the World Cup on Sunday. In the official team photo, the players held up a banner reading: “Champions are those who never give up. Thank you, Argentina.”
The tie will be decided on Tuesday 28 July, when Tigre host Nacional at the Estadio José Dellagiovanna from 21:30 local time. The prize is significant: the winners will face Montevideo City Torque in the Round of 16. El Bolso, who have never lost a CONMEBOL Sudamericana knockout tie against Argentinian opposition, will need a historic comeback in Victoria.

- Tigre won by three or more goals away from home for only the third time in CONMEBOL competitions, following 3-0 victories over Anzoátegui in the 2013 Libertadores and Puerto Cabello in the 2023 Sudamericana. The win over Nacional was their first by such a margin in the knockout stages.
- Tigre are the third team to beat Nacional away from home by three goals in a CONMEBOL competition in the 21st century. The other two were River Plate in the 2020 Libertadores, with a 6-2 victory, and Cruzeiro in the 2010 Libertadores, with a 3-0 win.
- This was Tigre’s third away victory in a CONMEBOL knockout match. In 2013, they beat Deportivo Anzoátegui 3-0 in the Libertadores preliminary stage, while in 2012 they defeated Argentinos Juniors 2-1 in the second round of the Sudamericana.
- Ignacio Russo leads Tigre for goal involvements in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, with four: three goals and one assist. He is the first El Matador player to reach that figure in a single CONMEBOL tournament since 2013, when Gabriel Peñalba, Matías Pérez García and Rubén Botta all did so in the Libertadores.
- Jalil Elías scored Tigre’s earliest-ever goal in a CONMEBOL competition, finding the net after 1 minute and 42 seconds. He surpassed Martín Morel’s fourth-minute goal against San Lorenzo in the 2009 Sudamericana.
- This was only the second time Tigre scored at least twice away from home before half-time in a CONMEBOL competition. The previous occasion came against Libertad, when they scored three first-half goals in the group stage of the 2013 Libertadores.
- At 18 years and 163 days old, Agustín dos Santos became the third-youngest player to start for Nacional in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, behind Ignacio La Luz in 2002, at 17 years and 139 days, and Juan Ángel Albín in 2003, at 17 years and 40 days.
