- Cienciano produced a commanding home win over Botafogo and will travel to Brazil for the second leg with a sizeable advantage.

The Peruvian side made home advantage count at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, thrashing Botafogo 6-1 — the Brazilian side having arrived unbeaten for the first leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 — and now dream of sealing their place in the next round in Rio de Janeiro.
Cienciano were a whirlwind in the first half, producing that display against a heavyweight opponent in 'Fogão', who had yet to taste defeat in this year's Great Conquest. For the opening leg of the tie, the Cusco-based side were without their leading goalscorer, Carlos Garcés, who had scored four times in the Group Stage but was suspended after picking up his third booking and therefore missed the clash with Botafogo.
But Melgarejo, who had backed every member of his squad during the week, put his faith in 27-year-old forward Succar, who opened the scoring in the 18th minute. Born in Lima, the striker produced a superb header from Alejandro Hohberg's cross from the right to get the home side's historic night underway.
Just two minutes later, Neri Bandiera made it 2-0 for Cienciano. Marcos Martinich found Maximiliano Amondarain, who nodded the ball into the path of the Argentine forward, leaving him with the simple task of tapping home. The stadium was bursting with joy, but there was still more to come. Succar's goalscoring instinct came to the fore once again as he reacted quickest to make it three, capitalising on a mistake from Brazilian goalkeeper Warleson, who failed to clear Bandiera's cross cleanly.
Before half-time, 'Papá' added a fourth. Argentine full-back Martinich tried his luck from distance and produced a stunning strike that flew into Warleson's top-right corner to make it 4-0. Shortly before the break, Portuguese manager Franclim Carvalho brought on Artur Cabral and Kauan Toledo for Kadir Barría and Álvaro Montoro respectively, searching for a response from the visiting side.
Four minutes into the second half, Botafogo pulled one back through a precise free-kick from Matheus Martins. The Brazilian side began to grow into the game and push further up the pitch after the goal, but their hopes were short-lived.
Hohberg once again turned provider, finding Neri Bandiera with a through ball. The Argentine forward made no mistake when faced with the goalkeeper one-on-one, completing his brace.
The magical cup night in Cusco still had one more chapter to write. In the 77th minute, 'Cachito' Souza burst forward down the right and delivered a cross towards Succar, the masked striker who had emerged as the hero. Once again, he found the net with a header to put the finishing touch on a dream individual — and collective — performance.
The 'Imperiales' will travel to Brazil to face Botafogo next Thursday for the second leg, with the 'Fogão' facing a daunting task if they are to overturn the deficit.
