Vágner Mancini’s team were made to work harder than expected to advance in the competition. After a tightly contested 0-0 draw in the first leg, they found the breakthrough at home through Pedro Henrique, who finished off a perfectly executed set-piece routine. RB Bragantino will face Atlético Mineiro in the Round of 16.
Roared on by the home crowd, RB Bragantino were the first side to take control of proceedings. Rodriguinho picked out Sasha, who turned sharply on the edge of the box and got his shot away under pressure from the Sporting defenders. His effort drifted just wide of the right post of Diego Enríquez’s goal, with the goalkeeper having been one of the standout performers in the first leg.
The same pattern emerged again minutes later. Rodriguinho combined with Henry Mosquera down the right, the Colombian cut inside and sent a low effort narrowly wide of the post. After the hydration break, the midfielder wearing the No. 20 shirt once again drove a ‘Massa Bruta’ attack, striking from distance with his left foot and rattling the left post. On the balance of play, the São Paulo side had already done enough to deserve the lead.
Late in the first half, the evergreen Hernán Barcos came close to giving the Peruvian side the lead with a header, but Cleiton responded confidently to keep the score level.
Ten minutes into the second half, Martín Távara was sent off for a second yellow card, leaving the visitors down to ten men. From the resulting free kick, RB Bragantino made the numerical advantage count with a perfectly executed set-piece routine: Rodriguinho found Juninho Capixaba, the full-back delivered a cross to the far post, Lucas Barbosa headed it back across goal and Pedro Henrique was there to turn the ball into the net and put the Brazilian side ahead.
Driven by the need to find an equalizer, Sporting continued to push forward despite being a man down and began to threaten the opposition goal. Cleiton emerged as the hero once again, producing a superb point-blank save to deny Maxloren Castro.
The hosts had chances to extend their lead and seal qualification with less drama, but a lack of precision in the final third meant they had to wait until Uruguayan referee Esteban Ostojich’s final whistle to finally celebrate.
The Round of 16 will feature an all-Brazilian clash, with RB Bragantino and Atlético Mineiro set to face each other in the next stage, to be played between August 11 and 20.
