Once again, they built the win from the back: relying on Andrés Mosquera’s solidity when under pressure and then exploiting their strengths whenever opportunities arose to break forward on the counterattack.
Fagúndez, a product of Nacional’s youth system in Uruguay, has emerged as one of Santa Fe’s main attacking weapons. In the first leg, he came on in the 84th minute and needed little time to make an impact, scoring the second goal in the 2-0 victory. The pattern repeated itself in the return leg: once again used as a fresh option from the bench, he combined with Alexis Zapata to seal the 3-0 win.
With his latest goal, the Uruguayan drew level with Hugo Rodallega as Santa Fe’s top scorer in CONMEBOL competitions in 2026, with three goals. Repetto knows that Rodallega’s experience can be complemented by nearby attacking references capable of bringing even more out of his veteran forward. Bustos, who opened the scoring to set qualification on course, provided composure and control at the most demanding moment of the tie. The Argentine has been directly involved in goals in both of his CONMEBOL Sudamericana appearances this season, both against Caracas: an assist in the first leg and a goal in the return.
River Plate, currently on a run of three consecutive defeats in domestic competition, already know what awaits them next: a pragmatic opponent capable of defending when required and attacking with real intensity whenever the game allows it.
