The numbers place him in an exclusive club in the Copa's history — and in pursuit of a record with an illustrious owner: Juan Román Riquelme.
The night of the "century" was a summary of his career. On 35 minutes of the Round of 16 second leg, he drove down the left, played a one-two with Pedro and finished first time, across goal and into the top corner, to open the scoring at the Maracanã. And when Cruzeiro had equalized and the tie was drifting toward penalties, he appeared again with a pass between the lines that led to Pedro's assist for Samuel Lino's decisive goal. One hundred matches — and on the round number, once again the ball ran through his feet in everything that mattered.
The X-ray of the milestone speaks of three shirts and a whole life in the Copa. Of the 100 matches, 69 came with Flamengo, 19 with Cruzeiro and 12 with Defensor Sporting, the club where he debuted in the tournament in 2014. In all of history, only Riquelme has more: the Boca idol scored in the Round of 16 of six editions (2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, 2012 and 2013). The comparison is no accident: these are two number 10s who turned this stage into a "comfortable" setting. Twelve years separate the Uruguayan's first Copa goal from this year's — footballing longevity reserved for the chosen few: he changed country, club and context, and the Round of 16 kept finding him in decisive mode.
The journey explains the accumulation. De Arrascaeta introduced himself to the Copa in a Defensor Sporting shirt, crossed to Brazil to wear Cruzeiro's, and since 2019 has become the creative heart of Flamengo, with whom he has conquered La Gloria Eterna three times: 2019, 2022 and 2025. For the Uruguayan it will be chapter 101 — or beyond — of a story showing no signs of an ending: at 32, he remains a key, difference-making figure in one of the most demanding teams on the continent.
And the historical carrot remains. To equal Riquelme's mark he needs to score in the Round of 16 of a sixth edition, an appointment he can only chase from the next Copa onward. In the meantime, every match stretches his century and every big performance feeds the comparison with the finest creators ever to grace the tournament. At the Maracanã they no longer ask whether De Arrascaeta belongs among the great conductors in Libertadores history: they ask how far he can go.
