- A continental champion in 2025, the midfielder brings precision, leadership and experience to a team pursuing the fifth CONMEBOL Libertadores title in its history.
- His influence extends to the dressing room, where he supports younger players and helps convey Leonardo Jardim’s ideas.
Jorginho has a gift for staying one step ahead. Before choosing a pass, he tries to understand everything that will happen next: a teammate’s position, an opponent’s distance or the space about to open up. That reading of the game gives him an edge, allowing him to dictate play and make decisions easier for those around him. “Anticipating the play makes the next action easier,” he explained in May, after a victory over Grêmio that encapsulated his influence at Flamengo: he completed 120 of his 124 attempted passes, with an outstanding accuracy rate of almost 97%.
That ability takes on particular significance as Leonardo Jardim’s side pursue another CONMEBOL Libertadores title. Champions in 2025 and once again among the continent’s final four, ‘Mengão’ will battle Estudiantes for a place in the Final following the goalless draw in La Plata. For Jorginho, who arrived midway through last year, the challenge is to build on a story that has already brought a first title in Lima.
His move to Rio de Janeiro was driven by an ambition he had yet to fulfil. Having built his professional career in Europe, he wanted to play in the country where he was born and raised. At his unveiling in June 2025, he explained that the squad’s qualities and the club’s vision provided the right setting for his football. That choice was also reflected in his shirt number: among other personal reasons, 21 was a reference to 2021, which he regarded as the most important year of his career. That was when he won the European Championship with his national team, lifted the Champions League trophy with Chelsea and was named UEFA Men’s Player of the Year. Flamengo offered him the chance to attach new memories to that number.
His adaptation quickly translated into performances on the pitch. Jorginho became a key figure in starting moves and keeping the ball flowing, bringing added quality to every involvement. The numbers from that display against Grêmio also highlight his attacking contribution: 90 of his 124 attempted passes came in the opposition half. His precision helps the team establish themselves close to the opposition goal.
His teammates’ recognition grew alongside his influence on the pitch. “Day by day, you earn that trust, which is very important,” he told ge in November 2025, explaining how he had found his place within the squad. Conversations and time spent together at team camps helped him understand each player’s characteristics. His leadership grew through those shared experiences.
The younger players know that side of him particularly well. After the friendly against Benfica during Flamengo’s preparations in Portugal in July 2026, several academy players interrupted one of his interviews with jokes and displays of affection. Jorginho then explained the thinking behind his advice and demands: “When we get on their nerves a little, it’s only for their own good.” For the midfielder, being part of the first-team squad is a learning opportunity that young players must embrace both on and off the pitch.
That experience also helped Leonardo Jardim settle in. Alongside other senior figures, including Danilo and Alex Sandro, Jorginho helped communicate the coach’s ideas within the dressing room. “They were very important in helping me settle in,” the Portuguese coach acknowledged in an interview with Mengocast, discussing the squad’s experienced players.
His ability to read the game had already helped Flamengo on a decisive night. In the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores Final against Palmeiras, his composure on the ball helped the team manage the match after Danilo’s goal. The Champions League and European Championship winner then discovered a new dimension to victory: after lifting the trophy, he expressed his amazement at the strength of the bond with the supporters and the celebrations surrounding him at Lima’s Estadio Monumental.
The title defence is entering a decisive phase, and Flamengo will be able to welcome back one of their key playmakers. Having served his suspension for the sending-off against Independiente del Valle during the goalless draw with Estudiantes, Jorginho is available again for the return leg. His return gives Jardim a crucial figure to organise the build-up, link the lines and keep attacking moves flowing.
The tie will be decided on 22 October at the Maracanã, with the Final in Montevideo on the horizon. Flamengo remain unbeaten in the competition and will look to make home advantage count as they continue their title defence. In that pursuit, Jorginho brings an understanding of football that shapes both his play and his relationships with others: anticipating what comes next, making his teammates’ jobs easier and helping the team take another step towards Eternal Glory.
