- Estudiantes and Corinthians could not be separated in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter-finals.

The Argentine side were unable to make home advantage count as they drew 1-1 with Fernando Diniz's team. The tie will be decided next Wednesday at the Neo Química Arena in São Paulo. The winners of the second leg will face the winners of the tie between reigning champions Flamengo and Independiente del Valle.
Alexander Medina's side turned to set pieces as an effective route to goal. Four minutes into the first half, following an excellent cross from the left by Joaquín Tobio Burgos, Hugo Souza managed to parry captain Guido Carrillo's powerful header, but the rebound fell to Alexis Castro, who made no mistake from close range to put the hosts ahead early on.
Castro could have doubled the lead shortly afterwards following a precise pass from Carrillo, but a quick reaction from Souza, the Brazilian side's goalkeeper, denied the midfielder.
The 'Timão' had two chances in the first half, both from distance. Corinthians captain Rodrigo Garro and Memphis Depay tried their luck from range, but both efforts flew wide of Fernando Muslera's goal. Towards the end of the opening period, Baltasar Rodríguez — also from distance — came close to putting the 'Pincha' 2-0 up, with his effort taking a deflection off Gustavo Henrique and almost looping over Souza.
The Brazilian side responded immediately after the restart. Four minutes into the second half, an outstanding pass from Garro found the young Kaio César between the lines, and he calmly finished into the far corner to level the score.
The equaliser disrupted the plans and the intelligent approach that the 'León' had implemented — and controlled until that point — in midfield. The Argentine side, four-time winners of the CONMEBOL Libertadores, began relying on long balls towards Carrillo and Correa.
The centre-forward, who became Estudiantes' all-time leading scorer in the Eternal Glory with 14 goals after his two strikes in the Round of 16, had two opportunities to beat Souza. First, he sent a volley over the bar, before seeing a weak effort saved after creating space for himself in a one-on-one duel with Gustavo Henrique.
The physicality and intensity of the contest shaped the final stages. In the dying moments, Souza flew to his left and, with a superb reflex save, turned away a precise header from Correa that could have given Estudiantes the victory.
The second leg will be played next Wednesday in São Paulo. Argentine defender Gastón Benedetti will miss the match through an accumulation of yellow cards. The winners of the tie will face either Flamengo or Independiente del Valle, who begin their quarter-final tie in Ecuador this Thursday.
