Joaquín Tobio Burgos was Estudiantes de La Plata's most influential player in the 1-1 draw against Universidad Católica at Estadio UNO, in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Libertadores.
The 21-year-old winger, who featured in just three of the 'León's' ten matches in the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores — missing the opening two games with a thigh injury and the knockout stage after suffering a fractured pelvis — finally earned his chance for redemption.
Uruguayan coach Alexander Medina handed him a place in the attacking line for the first leg of the Round of 16, and the Estudiantes academy graduate did not disappoint. He scored the opening goal and showed flashes of quality in his link-up play with Fabricio Pérez — his former team-mate in the club's reserve side — and experienced striker and captain Guido Carrillo.
That combination gave the 'Pincha' an attacking unit that, for long stretches of the match, blended experience and quality with youthful energy and boldness. He contributed in the build-up — producing a perfectly weighted pass for Pérez early in the second half that almost doubled Estudiantes' lead — and also provided a constant one-on-one threat in the final third.
In a squad filled with established names, Medina knows he has another valuable option in Tobio Burgos to unlock tight, hard-fought matches. Now, after scoring his first goal in international competition, the youngster will be eager to keep making the most of an opportunity that had been a long time coming.
