The CONMEBOL Council has confirmed that the CONMEBOL Libertadores final, scheduled for November 28, will be held in Montevideo, Uruguay, as announced during the Group Stage draw conducted this Thursday, March 19, at CONMEBOL’s headquarters in the city of Luque, Paraguay.

It will be the second single-match final to take place in the Uruguayan capital. Palmeiras defeated Flamengo 2–1 in a dramatic final decided by Deyverson’s goal five minutes into extra time, in front of more than 55,000 fans at the Estadio Centenario.

Montevideo is one of the venues with the richest tradition in the history of the competition. On April 19, 1960, the first match of the CONMEBOL Libertadores was played, with Peñarol as the protagonist: they thrashed Jorge Wilstermann 7–1 in a standout performance by Alberto Spencer, the competition’s all-time leading scorer, who netted four goals. Carlos Borges, who scored a brace, etched his name in history by netting the tournament’s first-ever goal in the 13th minute of the first half.

Montevideo also hosted the first final in CONMEBOL Libertadores history. It was during that inaugural edition, on June 12, when Peñarol welcomed Paraguay’s Olimpia to the Estadio Centenario for the first leg: the ‘Manya’ secured a 1–0 win thanks to Spencer’s decisive goal, an advantage that allowed them to lift the first of their five continental titles after a 1–1 draw in Asunción.

The Uruguayan capital hosted another fifteen finals through 2011, the last featuring a local side when Peñarol drew 0–0 with Brazil’s Santos in the first leg of a tie that ultimately went in favor of Neymar’s ‘Peixe’ in the return leg. In 1988, also at the Centenario, Nacional became the last Uruguayan club to lift the continental trophy with a commanding 3–0 victory over José Yudica’s Newell’s Old Boys.
