- Sporting Cristal and RB Bragantino drew 0-0 in Lima in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 play-offs.
- The return leg will be played in Brazil on Wednesday 29 July, when the winners of the tie will be decided. Atlético Mineiro await in the next round.
The Peruvian side, who began the knockout stage of the South American competition with Roberto Mosquera as their new head coach, were unable to make home advantage count against the São Paulo outfit. The goalkeepers from both teams were the standout performers at the Estadio Nacional.
Young forward Maxloren Castro threatened with a powerful shot in the fifth minute, forcing Brazilian goalkeeper Cleiton to turn it behind for a corner. After that early chance, the two sides shared possession and the initiative, with physical battles the defining feature of a first half that produced little action in either penalty area.
Towards the end of the opening period, RB Bragantino put together a flowing move from left to right that ended at Marcelino’s feet, but his shot flew over and failed to trouble Diego Enriquez in the Peruvian goal.
Sporting Cristal responded and came close to breaking the deadlock. Santiago González controlled a long pass and found Hernán Barcos — the CONMEBOL Sudamericana’s all-time leading scorer with 20 goals — who guided the ball with his chest before directing a shot towards the corner. Cleiton reacted superbly, stretching to deny the hosts.
Both goalkeepers were tested in the opening minutes of the second half and, by then, had already established themselves as the standout performers for their respective teams. Enriquez denied Pitta — who featured for Paraguay at the FIFA World Cup — in a difficult one-on-one, while Cleiton dealt comfortably with an effort from Barcos.
Fifteen minutes after the restart, Rodriguinho tried his luck from distance and drew a fine save from the Cervecero goalkeeper. Matheus Fernandes attempted the same with five minutes remaining, unleashing a powerful strike that crashed against the Peruvian side’s right-hand post.
Mosquera’s substitutions brought fresh energy to Sporting Cristal’s attack, but a lack of accuracy in the final third prevented the hosts from securing a victory that would have given them added momentum ahead of next week’s trip to Brazil in pursuit of a place in the Round of 16.
The decisive second leg will be played on Wednesday 29 July at 9.30pm local time at the Estadio Municipal Cícero de Souza Marques.

Across the 2026 season in Peru’s Liga 1, the CONMEBOL Sudamericana and the CONMEBOL Libertadores, he ranks third among Cervecero players in this category with 33, behind only Távara (38) and Yosimar Yotún (51).
- In addition to leading Red Bull Bragantino in shots (four) and touches inside the opposition penalty area (six), Isidro Pitta had Massa Bruta’s three best chances against Sporting Cristal, with efforts worth 0.20 xG, 0.19 xG and 0.15 xG.
- Guzmán Rodríguez of Red Bull Bragantino made 13 clearances against Sporting Cristal, the highest total by a Massa Bruta player in a CONMEBOL Sudamericana match since at least 2013. He surpassed Fabricio Bruno’s 12 against Talleres in 2021.
