On the road to the decisive stage: how the CONMEBOL Sudamericana semi-final first legs will be played

Vasco da Gama remontó ante Olimpia y clasificó a cuartos
  • Boca Juniors and Vasco da Gama will get the final stage before the 'Great Conquest' under way in Buenos Aires, while defending runners-up Atlético Mineiro will host surprise package Montevideo City Torque in Belo Horizonte.

  • Two Brazilian sides, one Argentine team and one Uruguayan club remain in contention for the trophy. The first legs will be played on Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October.

The CONMEBOL Sudamericana is entering a new chapter in the closing stages of the competition. Four contenders will contest two semi-final ties, each with its own distinct narrative. Boca, the only semi-finalist to have lifted the trophy before, will face Vasco da Gama in a tie that already has a history of its own in CONMEBOL competitions. The 'Galo' will be seeking revenge after losing last season's Final to Lanús and will take on Marcelo Méndez's side, who have already made their mark on the competition to reach the last four on the continent.

The Alberto J. Armando and Arena MRV will host the first legs of the final two-legged ties in this year's competition. The countdown to the decisive match, which will take place on 21 November at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla, is entering its final stretch.

Agenda Semifinales CONMEBOL Sudamericana

Boca Juniors v Vasco da Gama

The side managed by Rodolfo Arruabarrena, the only team to have won the trophy in consecutive editions (2004 and 2005), will face Vasco da Gama in CONMEBOL competition for the first time in 25 years. The sides have met four times before, all in 2001, with the 'Xeneize' holding the upper hand: two wins and two draws.

This will be the Argentine side's second tie against Brazilian opposition in the knockout stage of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, having eliminated São Paulo in the quarter-finals on their way to the last four. In the first leg in Buenos Aires, the hosts won 1-0 thanks to a Miguel Merentiel goal. The return leg at the MorumBIS ended 1-1: Uruguayan midfielder Leandro Lozano opened the scoring for the Buenos Aires side on a memorable night for him, before Domingos Duarte equalised for São Paulo.

The 'Cruz-Maltino' grew into their continental campaign. They had to work hard to get past Independiente Medellín in the Round of 16 Play-offs, winning 3-2 on aggregate. In the round of 16, they followed a goalless first-leg draw with a commanding 4-1 victory over Olimpia in the return fixture. Their final opponents before reaching the semi-finals were Independiente Santa Fe.

Against the Colombian side, Vasco showed defensive solidity, with Léo Jardim outstanding in goal — keeping a clean sheet in seven of the team's 12 matches in this year's CONMEBOL Sudamericana — while their main attacking options provided a goal threat and Santiago Sosa supplied the balance they had been seeking in midfield. After a goalless draw in the first leg against 'El León', Vasco won the return fixture 2-0 through goals from Bruno Duarte and David.

The match in numbers:

  • Boca will contest their 10th semi-final tie against Brazilian opposition in CONMEBOL competitions. The 'Xeneize' reached the Final in seven of the previous nine, including their only Sudamericana semi-final against Internacional in 2004.

  • Boca and Vasco have met four times in CONMEBOL competitions, all in 2001, and the 'Xeneize' remain unbeaten in the head-to-head record: two wins in the Libertadores and two draws in the Copa Mercosur.

  • Vasco have played two semi-final ties against Argentine sides in CONMEBOL competitions, both against River Plate. The 'Cruz-Maltino' progressed on both occasions, in the 1998 Libertadores and the 2000 Copa Mercosur.

  • Boca have lost just one of their last 21 home matches in the knockout stages of CONMEBOL competitions, winning each of their six most recent games. Their only defeat in that run came against Brazilian opposition, a 1-0 loss to Internacional in the 2020 Libertadores round of 16.

  • Having played just five matches in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, Leandro Paredes ranks eighth for involvement in sequences ending in a shot, excluding set-pieces, with 44. Every other player in the top 10 for this metric has played at least nine matches in this year's competition.

  • Vasco (27) and Boca (19) are two of the three teams to have made the most direct attacks in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana so far. However, the 'Xeneize' have played half as many matches in the competition (six) as the 'Cruz-Maltino' (12). Both sides have scored twice from these attacks.

  • Vasco have kept a clean sheet in seven of their 12 matches in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana. The record for clean sheets in a single edition belongs to Estudiantes, who kept nine in 2023.

  • Andrés Gómez (Vasco) and Sebastián Villa (Boca) are among the five players to have completed the most ball carries into the opposition penalty area since the start of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, with 21 and 20 respectively.

  • Eight of Boca's last 11 home goals in all competitions have come in the second half. Leonel Flores scored three of those eight, including a brace in his most recent appearance at La Bombonera against Unión in the Argentine Professional League.

  • Three of Vasco's nine away goals in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana have been scored by Claudio Spinelli. The Argentine forward has already scored at La Bombonera, when he was playing for San Martín de San Juan in 2018.

Atlético Mineiro v Montevideo City Torque

The side managed by Argentine Eduardo Domínguez have reached the semi-finals after coming through two dramatic knockout ties against fellow Argentine opposition. In the round of 16, they eliminated RB Bragantino after winning 1-0 in Bragança Paulista and drawing 2-2 in the return leg at Arena MRV.

The next round went to a penalty shoot-out after Atlético and Santos finished level at 4-4 on aggregate, following a 2-0 defeat at Vila Belmiro and a 4-2 win in Belo Horizonte. Tomás Cuello's goal — his third consecutive match with a goal in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana — took the tie to penalties, where Gabriel Delfim excelled, saving three spot-kicks to secure the 'Galo's' place in the last four.

Montevideo City Torque have their sights set on an immediate milestone: becoming the first Uruguayan side to reach the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Final. Their record against Brazilian opposition gives them reason to believe. The Uruguayan side remain unbeaten against teams from Brazil in CONMEBOL competitions, with two wins and two draws.

Their quarter-final tie was a display of character, sporting pride and the ability to respond in adverse circumstances. The 'Ciudadanos' lost the first leg 2-0 away to Cienciano, the 2003 champions, in Cusco. Back in Montevideo, with Salomón Rodríguez in outstanding form, they turned the tie around with a 3-0 win, securing the best international campaign in the club's 19-year history. The Uruguayan forward scored twice to take his tally in the 'Great Conquest' to seven goals and has become the clear focal point of Marcelo Méndez's pragmatic, competitive attack.

  • Atlético Mineiro have played just two knockout ties against Uruguayan opposition in CONMEBOL competitions. Both came in the preliminary rounds of the 2019 Libertadores, when they eliminated Danubio in Phase 2 and Defensor Sporting in Phase 3.

  • Atlético Mineiro will look to become the second team to reach the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Final in consecutive editions. Boca are the only side to have achieved this so far, winning back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005.

  • If they win the tie, City Torque will become the first Uruguayan club to qualify for a CONMEBOL Sudamericana Final. This century, Peñarol are the only Uruguayan side to have reached a final in a CONMEBOL competition, facing Santos in the 2011 Libertadores.

  • Atlético Mineiro have won 15 of their last 18 home matches in CONMEBOL competitions, drawing two and losing one. During that run, they beat both Uruguayan sides they hosted: 3-2 against Peñarol in the 2024 Libertadores and 2-1 against Juventud de Las Piedras in the 2026 Sudamericana.

  • City Torque are unbeaten against Brazilian opposition in CONMEBOL competitions, with two wins and two draws. They are the fourth team to have played at least four matches against Brazilian sides in these competitions without losing, alongside Águilas Doradas (two wins, two draws), Ferro Carril Oeste (three wins, one draw) and Independiente Rivadavia (one win, three draws).

  • Atlético Mineiro have scored four goals following elaborate sequences involving more than ten passes before the shot since the start of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, at least twice as many as any other team in this year's competition. São Paulo and Olimpia are next, with two each.

  • Salomón Rodríguez of City Torque is the leading goalscorer in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, with seven goals. Only 13 players have scored more than that in a single edition of the competition. The only player to do so for a Uruguayan club was Agustín Álvarez Martínez, who scored ten for Peñarol in 2021.

  • City Torque have spent the highest average number of minutes per match in the lead (46.5) since the group stage of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana began. The Montevideo side have been behind for only two of their 11 matches in this edition, both away from home: for 62 minutes against Riestra in the group stage and 74 minutes against Cienciano in the quarter-finals.

  • Tomás Cuello has scored in three consecutive matches for Atlético Mineiro in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana. The Argentine forward has been directly involved in at least one goal in five of his six appearances in this edition, with three goals and four assists.

  • Atlético Mineiro goalkeeper Everson has the highest goals-prevented figure in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, at 5.01. Meanwhile, City Torque goalkeeper Franco Torgnascioli leads the competition for crosses claimed, with 12.
