The final team to qualify for the CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2026 Quarter-finals will be decided on Wednesday. River Plate will host Independiente Santa Fe at Estadio Mâs Monumental at 21:30 local time in Argentina following a goalless draw in Bogotá.
The stalemate at El Campín left the tie level, although the two sides emerged with contrasting impressions. Santa Fe created the most dangerous chances of the match but could not find a way past Santiago Beltrán. River’s young goalkeeper kept his side in the contest and played a decisive role in ensuring the Argentine team returned to Buenos Aires with the aggregate score still goalless.
Nahuel Bustos posed a constant threat to the visitors’ defence. One of his efforts was diverted onto the crossbar by Beltrán, while another struck the post. Hugo Rodallega also tested the goalkeeper, and Franco Fagúndez came close to scoring late on. River’s best opportunity arrived early in the match, when Lautaro Rivero’s header was kept out by Weimar Asprilla.
The 0-0 draw means both teams must pursue victory in Buenos Aires. Whichever side wins within 90 minutes will advance, while another draw —regardless of the score— will send the tie directly to a penalty shootout.
River will look to capitalise on a home record that remains unbeaten in this year’s competition. Eduardo Coudet’s team recorded two wins and one draw at the Mâs Monumental during the Group Stage, scoring five goals and conceding only once. Those results helped them finish unbeaten and top Group H with 14 points.
Santa Fe enter the decider after competing in two continental tournaments this season. After finishing third in their CONMEBOL Libertadores group, they entered the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Playoffs and eliminated Caracas 5-0 on aggregate. The draw against River also extended their run without conceding in the competition.
The tie brings together two former champions of La Gran Conquista. River lifted the trophy in 2014, before Santa Fe succeeded them in 2015 and became the first —and, to date, only— Colombian club to win the competition. Eleven years after those back-to-back triumphs, only one of them can remain in contention.
Vasco da Gama are already waiting in the Quarter-finals. The Brazilian side drew 0-0 with Olimpia in Rio de Janeiro before earning a 4-1 victory in Asunción to secure their place among the final eight.
