- Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate played out a goalless draw in the first leg of their CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 tie in Bogotá.
- Eduardo Coudet's side secured a valuable 0-0 draw at El Campín and will look to settle the tie in front of their home supporters next week.
The Colombian side dominated with their attacking approach for large spells of the match, but were unable to turn that threat into goals. Santiago Beltrán, the 'Millonario' goalkeeper, was the standout performer. The winner of the tie will face the winner of the clash between Olimpia and Vasco da Gama, who also played out a 0-0 draw in the first leg.
River almost opened the scoring moments after kick-off: Ángel Correa delivered a cross into the box which found Lautaro Rivero in the air; the defender's header looked destined for the corner, but Weimar Asprilla flew across to his left to keep the visitors from celebrating.
From that point onwards, the 'León' took control. The evergreen Hugo Rodallega, Independiente's leading goalscorer and a key figure in their Playoff victory over Caracas, turned away from his marker, beat an opponent and fired from distance, forcing Beltrán into his first important save.
The second, and crucial, intervention came from a superb reflex save to deny his compatriot Nahuel Bustos. The young Argentine goalkeeper got a touch to the effort, which then struck the crossbar. The former Talleres forward would threaten again towards the end of the first half, with his shot coming back off the post.
The second half began in much the same fashion. Uruguayan manager Pablo Repetto's side pushed forward in search of a breakthrough, while River, now with Thiago Almada and Joaquín Freitas on the pitch, dropped deeper to exploit the pace of their attacking players on the counter.
Nahuel Bustos capitalised on a mistake from Núñez's last line of defence, won the ball high up the pitch and attempted to lift his finish over the onrushing goalkeeper. His effort sailed just over the bar.
Late on, Uruguayan forward Franco Fagúndez had the chance to give the 'Expreso Rojo' victory. Argentine Maximiliano Lovera delivered a perfectly weighted cross, but the striker could not direct his effort accurately enough.
The draw was a reward for River, who withstood the Colombian side's pressure and will look to finish the job next Wednesday at the Monumental, where they remain unbeaten in the current edition of the Gran Conquista.
