Montevideo City Torque made history and advanced to the Quarter-finals

City Torque eliminó a Tigre
  • The Uruguayan side defeated Tigre 2-1 at the Estadio Centenario and completed a 3-1 aggregate victory.

  • Salomón Rodríguez scored twice for the hosts, while Valentín Moreno netted Tigre’s temporary equaliser.

Montevideo City Torque extended their impressive CONMEBOL Sudamericana campaign and qualified for the Quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history. Marcelo Méndez’s side defeated Tigre once again, this time 2-1 in Montevideo, and confirmed the advantage they had earned a week earlier in Victoria.

Forced to overturn the 1-0 defeat from the first leg, Tigre took the initiative in the opening minutes. The visitors controlled possession and looked to establish themselves in the opposition half, while City Torque remained compact, closed down the spaces and waited for the right moment to accelerate.

The Uruguayan side’s approach was rewarded in the 39th minute: Franco Pizzichillo, who scored the goal in Argentina, proved decisive once again, playing a part in the move that Salomón Rodríguez converted to make it 1-0. The ‘Matador’, however, responded immediately. Just two minutes later, Valentín Moreno equalised and restored uncertainty to the contest.

The closing stages of the first half tilted the tie further in favour of the Uruguayan side. Nahuel Banegas was sent off, leaving Tigre with ten men, and the referee awarded a penalty following his elbowing offence. Salomón Rodríguez converted from the spot to make it 2-1 before the break, completing his brace and taking his tally to five goals in the current edition of the competition.

With a numerical advantage and a two-goal lead on aggregate, the ‘Ciudadano’ managed the second half intelligently. Tigre retained possession for long stretches but were unable to turn that control into a succession of clear-cut opportunities. The hosts protected their penalty area well and carefully chose when to break forward on the counterattack.

Esteban Obregón and Gonzalo Montes both came close to extending the lead, while the Argentine side used all of their available substitutions in search of a response. City Torque maintained their shape until the final whistle and secured another victory at the Estadio Centenario, where they remain unbeaten in CONMEBOL competitions.

The 2-1 win, combined with the 1-0 victory away from home, completed a 3-1 aggregate triumph and secured the Montevideo club’s best-ever international campaign. In the Quarter-finals, Montevideo City Torque will face the winner of the tie between Cienciano and Botafogo.

The match in numbers

  • City Torque are the first Uruguayan team to reach the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Quarter-finals since 2022, when Nacional advanced to this stage after defeating, precisely, an Argentine opponent in the Round of 16 (vs. Unión Santa Fe).

  • Salomón Rodríguez (City Torque) scored his first brace in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana and joined Gabriel Barbosa and Rodrigo Contreras as the competition’s joint top scorers with five goals.

  • Salomón Rodríguez scored the second penalty goal in City Torque’s CONMEBOL Sudamericana history. The first was scored by Gustavo del Prete against Independiente in May 2021.

  • By the 38th minute, Tigre had registered eight shots and 64% possession, but conceded the opening goal from City Torque’s first shot on target.

  • Valentín Moreno scored his first professional goal for Tigre, doing so in his tenth CONMEBOL Sudamericana appearance for the ‘Matador’. He also recorded more key passes than any other player in the match (3).
