- Vasco da Gama were unable to make home advantage count as they drew with Olimpia in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16.
- Gastón Olveira, the Paraguayan side's goalkeeper, was the standout player and a key figure in securing the draw at São Januário.
Vasco and Olimpia met again after their clashes in the Group Stage of this year's Great Conquest. The Brazilian side had won 3-0 in Rio de Janeiro. This time, however, the story was different: the sides played out a goalless draw, leaving the tie finely poised ahead of next Thursday's second leg at the Defensores del Chaco in Asunción.
The first half had a clear dominant side: the hosts. Pushing further up the pitch, Vasco took control of the game, looking to take the initiative and attack their opponents down both flanks. The only reason the 'Cruz-Maltino' side failed to open the scoring had a name: Gastón Olveira.
The experienced goalkeeper, captain of the Paraguayan side, responded with authority whenever called upon. First, he denied a difficult angled effort from Uruguayan defender José Luis Rodríguez, before making a one-on-one save against David and then keeping out a long-range effort from Portuguese forward Nuno Moreira, one of Vasco's most dangerous attacking players.
Towards the end of the opening 45 minutes, Colombian Johan Rojas was unable to capitalise on a clear attacking opportunity. Olimpia's goalkeeper once again kept Pablo Sánchez's side alive, allowing them to go into half-time level at 0-0.
Pedro Emanuel, the Rio de Janeiro side's manager, made changes to give Vasco's attack a different tempo, as they were forced to look for more options against a 'Decano' defence that had dug in with the aim of holding on to the draw and taking the tie back to their own turf.
Marino Hinestroza, Ramón Rique and Claudio Spinelli were the home side's attacking changes, but none managed to alter the course of the second half, which became increasingly characterised by physicality and misplaced passes rather than cohesive attacking play.
Olimpia will return to Paraguayan soil with a positive result, particularly considering that the last time they hosted Vasco they won 3-1, with goals from Gamarra, Sandoval and Ferreira.

- Olimpia ended a run of six consecutive defeats away to Brazilian sides in CONMEBOL competitions. The last time they picked up a point in Brazil was another 0-0 draw, against Internacional in the 2021 Libertadores Round of 16.
- Vasco had five clear-cut chances against Olimpia, four of which were created from the left, with passes from Cuiabano (2), Thiago Mendes (1) and Lucas Piton (1). The exception was one chance created by Johan Rojas from the right.
- Olimpia faced 21 shots against Vasco. Since 2013, they have only once faced more shots without conceding in CONMEBOL competitions: 23 against Audax Italiano, also in 2026, last April.
- Puma Rodríguez (0.8 xG, six shots) and David (0.7 xG, four shots) accounted for 48% of Vasco's 21 shots and 67% of their 2.2 expected goals (xG) against Olimpia.
- Vasco had 21 shots to Olimpia's two. Their +19 shot differential is the second-highest recorded by the 'Cruz-Maltino' in a CONMEBOL competition match since at least 2013, behind only the +31 against LDU Quito in the 2018 CONMEBOL Sudamericana.
- Olimpia goalkeeper Gastón Olveira has made 33 saves in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, the second-highest tally by a goalkeeper in the competition, behind only Jhohan Gutiérrez of Independiente Petrolero (50). He made seven saves against Vasco.
