Jagger Herrera, the Boca youngster coming of age in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana

  • The 20-year-old defender made his first-team debut against Recoleta and has earned a place in Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side, who will face Vasco da Gama in the semi-finals.

  • A supporter of the club and a product of its youth system, he combines strong family support with a character that has already drawn praise from Boca greats.

Facundo Herrera became known for a resemblance before he had the chance to showcase his talents in the first team. His hair and facial features prompted his team-mates to nickname him “Jagger”, after the legendary Rolling Stones frontman, even though the youngster had never heard of the musician. “I’ve never listened to a Stones song. I didn’t know who he was,” he admitted to SportsCenter after winning the title with Boca’s reserve team. The nickname stuck before his first-team debut. In time, performances would follow that would make him recognisable for his football too.

At 20, the defender is navigating his first months in the senior squad as Boca pursue another CONMEBOL Sudamericana title. His debut came against Recoleta in the round of 16, and the continental campaign soon took him to another demanding stage: the Morumbí, where he helped secure qualification against São Paulo. “The opportunity came, we put him in, and he took it. He keeps improving and showing the strength of character a Boca centre-back needs. He knows he can’t stop there, that he has to keep learning and listen to the senior players. He’s a lad who listens, and that’s what matters,” said coach Rodolfo Arruabarrena. Now, with Vasco da Gama awaiting in the semi-finals, the youngster is part of a team with “La Gran Conquista” in their sights.

Born in San Martín and developed in the club’s youth system, Herrera progressed through the ranks before his step up to senior football, becoming one of the captains of Mariano Herrón’s reserve side: “We had been watching him in the reserves. Then it’s up to him to take his opportunities, and he’s doing that. We try not to push the youngsters too far too soon. We watch them in training and speak to their coaches, in this case Mariano,” explained “El Vasco”. His first-team opportunity arose amid injuries in defence. After making his debut against Recoleta, he replaced Ayrton Costa for the second half of the derby against Racing. In just a few days, he went from his debut to the challenge of delivering for 45 minutes at the Cilindro de Avellaneda.

Herrera’s performances gave Arruabarrena every reason to keep faith in him. The absences of Costa and Marco Pellegrino had opened the door, but Herrera retained his place when his team-mates recovered. The coach highlighted his ability to win duels, his development and the strength of character he showed in a position carrying such responsibility. A sustained run in the side began to take shape through performances that vindicated that initial decision.

The relationship between coach and defender also has an earlier chapter. Arruabarrena played alongside Leonardo Herrera, Facundo’s father, in Boca’s youth teams and even partnered him in central defence. “I know the family, and I know what he’s made of,” explained “El Vasco” when asked about the youngster’s emergence. Years after sharing the pitch with his father at youth level, he found himself guiding the son through his first steps in professional football.

For Jagger, that family support remains fundamental as his life has rapidly taken on a new dimension. “My dad tries to keep my feet on the ground,” he said in September in an interview with El Canal de Boca. The conversation took place at the Ezeiza training complex, where he had gone to support his former reserve-team colleagues. The step up to the first team brought greater responsibilities, but he has kept the friends who shared his journey close.

His performances have also caught the attention of those who know both the position and the shirt. Roberto Mouzo, Boca’s all-time leading appearance-maker, highlighted his concentration and speed of reaction: “I like the way he marks. He’s always alert and quick both on the ball and when dealing with his opponent.” Speaking to Super Deportivo Radio, the legendary defender focused on specific qualities in a youngster still gaining experience: his defensive awareness and his ability to act when the situation demands it.

The CONMEBOL Sudamericana has already provided an important test of that development. In the second leg of the quarter-final against São Paulo, Herrera rose to the challenge in an intimidating atmosphere and was named in the tournament’s Team of the Week alongside Leandro Lozano. The recognition came as Boca secured a place in the next round, moving closer to the final and giving the defender valuable continental experience so soon after his debut.

All of this comes with the added emotion of representing the club he supports. “You experience it differently, and you feel it more deeply,” he explained of that meeting of passion and profession. October will bring another challenge: Boca will host Vasco da Gama on the 13th before travelling to Brazil for the return leg on the 20th. For Herrera, the pursuit of “La Gran Conquista” will also be an opportunity to keep growing in the shirt he learned to love long before earning his place in its defence.
