- Independiente Santa Fe eliminated River Plate on penalties away from home to book their place in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Quarter-finals.
- Colombian goalkeeper Weimar Asprilla kept his side in the game during normal time and became the hero in the shoot-out, scoring the decisive penalty to seal the tie.
The 'León' progressed to the next round of the Great Conquest after a 1-1 draw over 90 minutes and an 8-7 victory on penalties, with Asprilla the standout performer. Pablo Repetto's side will face Vasco da Gama in the next round.
The opening minutes reflected the pattern that would subsequently be repeated for much of the match: River looked to take control, winning the ball back quickly with a high press and combining in the final third.
Four minutes into the first half, the side from Núñez threatened: Gonzalo Montiel and Ángel Correa advanced down the right, the full-back played the ball to Sebastián Driussi — back in the starting XI — but the forward could not finish effectively. Minutes later, in a move that would be repeated further into the match, Weimar Asprilla saved a Thiago Almada effort.
Hugo Rodallega, the 'León's' captain, created the visitors' first opportunity after the interval with a shot that went over. Shortly afterwards, with his first intervention of the match, Santiago Beltrán saved a header from Alexis Zapata. With the final chance of the first half, Almada produced an excellent individual run which Acuña followed up with a precise cross: once again Asprilla, this time denying Driussi, emerged as the saviour.
River took the lead eight minutes into the second half. The move was built by the same players who had led their attacks in the first half: Almada and Correa broke through the lines, Montiel — enjoying an excellent game — received the ball on the right and delivered a cross towards the far post. Driussi got ahead of his marker and tapped home to make it 1-0, scoring his third goal in three appearances in this year's competition.
Asprilla denied River a second with a superb reflex save from a powerful Acuña volley, just minutes after the 'Millonario' had taken the lead. The Argentine side failed to make the most of their advantage and began to struggle when tracking back. On 30 minutes of the second half, Independiente Santa Fe responded with two efforts from distance: first from Franco Fagúndez and then Christian Mafla; Beltrán saved both.
A series of ricochets following a corner led to a penalty for Independiente Santa Fe on 35 minutes after Martínez Quarta handled the ball inside the area. Uruguayan Fagúndez converted. Beltrán dived to his right and got a touch to the ball, but could not keep it out as the Colombian side levelled.
The final minutes passed under a cloud of nerves on both sides until Esteban Ostojich's final whistle sent the tie to a penalty shoot-out.
River converted their first three penalties through Almada, Correa and Nicolás Otamendi. Lovera and Torres did likewise with Santa Fe's first two, but Beltrán, so influential during the 90 minutes, saved Emmanuel Olivera's effort. Freitas and Palacios converted the fourth penalties for each side. Rafael Santos Borré had the chance to settle the tie with River's fifth, but struck the post. Fagúndez, as he had done in normal time, scored his penalty to send the shoot-out into sudden death.
Lucas Martínez Quarta missed River's sixth penalty, and Beltrán once again became the saviour by saving Jhojan Torres' effort to keep the Argentine side alive. Fausto Vera and Scarpeta converted the seventh penalties. Asprilla and Beltrán were the heroes in the eighth round: González for River and Angulo for Santa Fe both failed to beat them. Acuña and Meza — for River — and Palacios and Mafla — for the Colombian side — converted their penalties. Beltrán took River's final penalty of the round but missed; Asprilla, however, scored his and sealed a historic victory and Santa Fe's place in the Quarter-finals.

- Santa Fe have won all four penalty shoot-outs they have contested in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana: River in the 2026 Round of 16, Millonarios in the 2018 Round of 16, Huracán in the 2015 Final and Deportivo Cali in the second round in 2011.
- The penalty shoot-out between River and Santa Fe featured 22 spot-kicks in total, equalling the highest number of penalties taken in a CONMEBOL Sudamericana shoot-out, set by Club Guaraní and Unión San Felipe in 2010.
- Santiago Beltrán is the first River goalkeeper to save three penalties in a CONMEBOL Libertadores or Sudamericana shoot-out. Before him, Franco Armani (2019 v Cruzeiro) and Germán Lux (2004 v Santos Laguna) had saved two each.
- This was the third time Santa Fe have avoided defeat away from home in Argentina in the knockout stages of CONMEBOL competitions. The previous two came in the 2015 CONMEBOL Sudamericana (a 1-0 win over Independiente in the Quarter-finals and a 0-0 draw with Huracán in the Final), the year they lifted the trophy.
- River Plate had 21 shots (seven on target) before scoring the opening goal in the 52nd minute. During that period, they had 78% possession and 2.27 expected goals.
- Gonzalo Montiel reached 10 assists in CONMEBOL tournaments, all for River. Since 2016, only two other players have registered 10 or more assists for the 'Millonario' in these competitions: Ignacio Fernández (12) and Matías Suárez (11).
- Sebastián Driussi scored in all three of his appearances in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana (v Blooming, Carabobo and Santa Fe). He also scored against Santa Fe for the second time in CONMEBOL competitions, having previously found the net in the 2016 Recopa final.
- Four of Franco Fagúndez's five goals in CONMEBOL competitions have come for Santa Fe in 2026, including goals in four of his last six appearances across the CONMEBOL Sudamericana and Libertadores.
- River's 31 shots rank among the five highest totals recorded by the 'Millonario' in a CONMEBOL competition match since Opta began tracking this data in 2013.
