The opening matches of the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 produced 18 goals, comebacks, away victories and a historic performance in Cusco. Cienciano built the biggest lead of the week, Boca Juniors and Santos came from behind to win, and only two of the seven ties that got underway ended level. Here is how each match unfolded.
Boca Juniors 3-1 Recoleta
Recoleta stunned Boca at the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó by taking the lead after just five minutes through Pedro Ríos, whose shot took a deflection before beating Álvaro Montero. The Paraguayan side even had opportunities to extend their advantage, but Wilfrido Báez’s sending-off late in the first half changed the course of the match. Boca made the most of their numerical advantage and turned the game around in a matter of minutes: Santiago Ascacíbar and Milton Delgado scored in the 49th and 51st minutes, both following contributions from Sebastián Villa, before Leonel Flores added the third.
Recoleta finished the match with nine men after Dairon Mosquera was also sent off, while ‘El Xeneize’ registered 39 attempts in search of an even greater margin. The 3-1 victory left Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side in a strong position ahead of the return leg on Tuesday, August 18, at 19:00 at the Estadio ueno Defensores del Chaco. A two-goal victory for Recoleta would send the tie to penalties.
Bolívar 1-1 São Paulo
São Paulo took the lead in the 23rd minute with one of the most effective ways of competing at altitude: Iago Borduchi delivered a corner and Robert Arboleda beat his marker inside the penalty area to score with a header. Bolívar then took the initiative, increased the pressure after the break and found an equaliser through Leonel Melgar, who beat Rafael with a powerful right-footed strike from outside the box.
The Brazilian goalkeeper made a number of important saves to preserve the result during the Bolivian side’s strongest spell. The draw means everything will be decided at the Estadio MorumBIS, where the teams will meet again on Tuesday, August 18, at 21:30. Any victory will secure qualification, while another draw will send the tie to penalties.
Red Bull Bragantino 0-1 Atlético Mineiro
Red Bull Bragantino produced more than 20 attempts and spent much of the second half camped inside the opposition half, but they were unable to find a way past Everson. The goalkeeper made seven saves to keep Atlético Mineiro in the contest until the visitors made their efficiency count: Tomás Cuello pounced on a ball Cleiton was unable to hold and scored in the 73rd minute for his first goal of this year’s competition.
‘El Galo’ therefore secured a valuable victory in the first continental meeting between the two sides and can advance with a draw in the return leg. The tie will be decided on Wednesday, August 19, at 19:00 at Arena MRV in Belo Horizonte. Bragantino will need to win by one goal to force penalties or by a larger margin to qualify directly.
Tigre 0-1 Montevideo City Torque
After an evenly contested first half, Montevideo City Torque found the only goal of the night eight minutes after the restart. Franco Pizzichillo dropped deep to help build the move, then appeared again near the penalty area and struck a shot that took a deflection off Nahuel Banegas before beating Felipe Zenobio. Tigre pushed for an equaliser following the introductions of Mauro Méndez, Santiago González and Ian Subiabre, but were unable to add precision to their territorial dominance.
The Uruguayan side thus claimed their first away victory against Argentine opposition in the competition, while Pizzichillo moved level with Gustavo Del Prete as the club’s all-time leading scorer in international competition with six goals. The return leg will be played on Wednesday, August 19, at 21:30 at the Estadio Centenario. City Torque will advance with a draw, while Tigre must win.
Santos 2-1 Macará
Macará ended Santos’ unbeaten run before the match had barely settled into a rhythm: Mateo Viera broke down the right and Franco Posse converted to make it 1-0 after five minutes. Santos responded through Neymar’s influence and found an equaliser before half-time. The No. 10 played Gabriel Barbosa through, and the forward lifted his finish over Rodrigo Rodríguez to celebrate his 100th goal for ‘Peixe’.
Neymar was also involved in the winning goal, taking the corner that Willian Arão converted to complete the 2-1 comeback. Santos will travel to the return leg with a one-goal advantage when the teams meet again on Thursday, August 20, at 19:00 at the Estadio Bellavista in Ambato. Macará will need to win by one goal to force penalties and by two or more to qualify directly.
Vasco da Gama 0-0 Olimpia
Vasco da Gama dominated the match at São Januário, registering 21 attempts and creating five clear chances, but were unable to reproduce the clinical finishing that had earned them a 3-0 victory over Olimpia in the Group Stage. Gastón Olveira was the main reason for the goalless draw: the Paraguayan captain made seven saves, including decisive stops to deny José Luis Rodríguez, David, Nuno Moreira and Johan Rojas.
Olimpia protected the draw and brought an end to a run of six consecutive defeats on visits to Brazil in CONMEBOL competitions. The tie will continue on Thursday, August 20, at 19:00 at the Estadio ueno Defensores del Chaco. Another draw will send the contest to penalties, while any victory will secure a place in the Quarter-finals.
Cienciano 6-1 Botafogo
Cienciano produced the most emphatic performance of the Round of 16 and built a four-goal advantage before half-time. Matías Succar, who replaced the suspended Carlos Garcés, was the standout performer with the first hat-trick of this year’s competition. Neri Bandiera scored twice and Marcos Martinich completed the rout, while Botafogo managed only a consolation goal in the second half.
The 6-1 result represented the biggest victory by a Peruvian team over Brazilian opposition in the history of CONMEBOL competitions and left Cienciano on the verge of a place in the Quarter-finals. The return leg will be played on Thursday, August 20, at 21:30 at the Estadio Nilton Santos. Botafogo must win by five goals to force penalties and by six to complete the comeback.
Independiente Santa Fe vs. River Plate: match rescheduled
The match originally scheduled for the opening week was postponed following the earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10. Independiente Santa Fe and River Plate will therefore be the final teams to begin their Round of 16 campaign, with their tie taking place one week later than originally scheduled.
The first leg will be played on Wednesday, August 19, at 19:30 at the Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campín in Bogotá. The return leg will take place on Wednesday, August 26, at 21:30 at the Estadio Más Monumental in Buenos Aires. The winner will face either Olimpia or Vasco da Gama in the Quarter-finals.
