Lanús have made a flying start to the second half of the season. The reigning CONMEBOL Sudamericana champions began the defense of their crown with a convincing 2-0 victory over Cienciano at La Fortaleza. Franco Watson opened the scoring in the 35th minute after supporting a quick counterattack led by Lucas Besozzi, while Ramiro Carrera sealed the result in stoppage time. The victory carried extra value for El Granate, who played almost half an hour with ten men following Besozzi’s dismissal and, despite being a man down, managed to protect their lead and extend it late on.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s side then continued their promising run with a 1-0 win over San Lorenzo in their opening match of the Argentine Clausura. Colombian Yoshan Valois scored the only goal of the game, allowing Lanús to string together two consecutive victories without conceding. Ahead of the return leg in Cusco, the coach will have to decide who replaces Besozzi, an important attacking figure who provided the assist for the opening goal of the tie.
Cienciano, meanwhile, were unable to bounce back over the weekend, falling 2-0 to Juan Pablo II College and remaining winless in the Peruvian Apertura. The Cusco-based side will look to turn their form around on a decisive night, relying on the altitude and their strength at home as they attempt to overturn the deficit. In the first leg, they played with a numerical advantage for much of the second half but were unable to break down the Argentine side’s resistance and conceded a second goal late on.
The clash will once again bring together two clubs that know what it means to conquer La Gran Conquista: Cienciano became the first Peruvian champions of the competition in 2003, while Lanús are defending the title they won in 2025. El Granate will look to manage their two-goal advantage, while El Papá must produce a comeback to extend their continental campaign. Botafogo await the winner in the Round of 16.
