After their memorable CONMEBOL Libertadores U20 triumph, Santiago Wanderers travelled to Madrid with a double mission: to crown their historic campaign and attempt to defeat mighty Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu in pursuit of the Intercontinental Cup. Although the journey ended in a 3-1 defeat to ‘Los Blancos’, the Chilean side produced another performance that showcased their competitiveness, heart and quality.
Real Madrid coach Álvaro López praised his opponents after the victory: “They made things very difficult for us. Congratulations to Santiago Wanderers. We took our chances and managed to get the win.” The head of ‘La Fábrica’ had good reason to acknowledge them: ‘El Caturro’ remained competitive and kept alive the hope of another remarkable achievement until the final minute. As they had throughout their continental campaign, they showed an ability to overcome different setbacks within the same match.
The afternoon in Madrid had not started well for Wanderers, who saw Dubó sent off in the 25th minute of the first half and then conceded four minutes later to Daniel Yáñez, who scored with an unstoppable free-kick and was one of the standout performers thanks to his constant threat down the right flank. Yet despite the red card and falling behind, the Valparaíso side never gave up, spurred on by a sizeable group of compatriots who made themselves heard in the heart of the Spanish capital.
Santiago Wanderers kept Real Madrid under control despite being a man and a goal down and, four minutes into the second half, made the most of a mistake in the opposition defence. Christian Silva pounced on an error in the build-up and finished with composure to spark celebrations in both Madrid and Valparaíso. Silva, the CONMEBOL Libertadores U20 top scorer with four goals, had once again delivered in a decisive moment for his team, just as he had done during the comeback against Palmeiras in the continental competition’s Semi-finals.
Wanderers built their continental triumph on an indomitable spirit and remarkable resilience. From the Group Stage onwards, the Chilean side repeatedly found ways to overcome adversity, fighting until the end and refusing to give up. In the opening phase, they equalised against Liga de Quito in the 92nd minute to secure the point that allowed them to finish top of their group and qualify for the Semi-finals. After overturning a deficit against Palmeiras through a Silva brace, they then found another late equaliser in the Final against two-time champions Flamengo, scoring in the 89th minute to force the penalty shootout in which they ultimately sealed the title.
This time, however, the effort was not enough to complete another remarkable feat. Silva went one-on-one with the goalkeeper 15 minutes into the second half, but the Real Madrid keeper denied him the chance to make it 2-1. Fran Santamaría made no mistake in the 81st minute, arriving at the far post to turn the ball home and restore Real Madrid’s lead, forcing ‘El Caturro’ to mount another response.
Fabiano Avello, another of the standout players in the Chilean side and a penalty-saving specialist, kept his team alive when he denied Daniel Yáñez from the spot in the fifth minute of stoppage time. However, with Santiago Wanderers pushing for an equaliser and down to nine men following the dismissals of Valenzuela and Carvacho, Roberto Martín struck in the 99th minute to seal the final 3-1 scoreline.
The defeat at the Bernabéu brought to an end a journey that has already earned its own place in Santiago Wanderers’ history. From their CONMEBOL Libertadores U20 triumph to their appearance in Madrid, this generation gave their supporters reasons to celebrate and to identify with the team. The intercontinental title ultimately went to Real Madrid, but the pride in everything they achieved will travel back to Valparaíso with a squad that dared to compete against the very best in the world.
