The first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores Quarter-final between Palmeiras and Liga de Quito left the tie wide open in another chapter between two teams renewing acquaintances after the thrilling Semi-final series they played a year ago. There were no emphatic scorelines this time, but the match still delivered memorable moments in a contest that will be decided next week in Quito.
There were embraces on both sides after the final whistle. Palmeiras celebrated the win, although they had done enough to feel their advantage could have been greater. For Liga de Quito, despite the defeat, the result left the door open: once again with Gonzalo Valle as the symbol of their resistance, Gustavo Álvarez's side left with only a one-goal deficit and will have their always influential home ground on their side as they look to complete the comeback. With the 3-0 Semi-final win of 2025 still fresh in the memory, confidence will be high in Ecuador ahead of the return leg.
Palmeiras took the initiative from the outset. With Jhon Arias heavily involved in the build-up and Vitor Roque and José Manuel López occupying the defenders, Abel Ferreira's side established themselves around the visitors' penalty area. Valle denied a high effort from Arias before comfortably dealing with a Marlon Freitas header, while Liga looked for spaces to break quickly through Michael Estrada.
The breakthrough came in the 25th minute of the first half. Alexander Barboza launched the ball forward from the back, Vitor Roque held off his marker and worked his way into the box. Valle parried his powerful effort, but Giay followed the play and headed home the rebound. It was a special moment for the Argentine full-back, who scored his first goal for Palmeiras in his 98th appearance for the club.
Liga came close to responding immediately. A poor piece of goalkeeping from Carlos Miguel left the ball at Estrada's feet, but Barboza recovered in time to prevent the forward from taking advantage of the unguarded goal. Before half-time, Palmeiras threatened again: Giay was unable to make clean contact with a Piquerez cross and the Ecuadorian defence blocked another dangerous move inside the box.
The pattern changed little after the break. Palmeiras controlled possession, attacked down the flanks and created a succession of chances, although they lacked the precision required to turn their dominance into a wider advantage. Arias fired over the crossbar and later forced Valle into action following a deflection, while the goalkeeper also came off his line to beat Vitor Roque to the ball after a Murilo header.
Liga's clearest opportunity came amid the home side's dominance. Alexander Alvarado diverted an aerial ball beyond the advancing Carlos Miguel and José Carabalí was poised to finish into an empty net. Giay, making his presence felt at the other end as well, got across in time and deflected the ball before the shot could come. His defensive intervention proved every bit as decisive as his goal on a night in which he emerged as the standout performer.
Valle kept Liga in the tie during Palmeiras' spells of greatest pressure and allowed the Ecuadorian side to return to Quito with a genuine chance of progressing. The Brazilian team will advance with a draw in the second leg. Liga will need to win by one goal to take the tie to penalties, or by a greater margin to qualify outright. Next Wednesday, at Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, the story will reach its decisive chapter.
