- Mirassol and Liga de Quito played out a draw in their Round of 16 reunion in the CONMEBOL Libertadores.

Mirassol had turned their home ground into one of their main strengths during their historic first appearance in the CONMEBOL Libertadores. They had won all three of their Group Stage matches at home and, until Thursday, August 13, had yet to concede a goal there. The first leg of the Round of 16 appeared to be heading towards a similar outcome, but Liga de Quito brought that run to an end at the most unexpected moment, just as Mirassol were enjoying their best spell of the match. Michael Estrada struck in the 37th minute of the second half to make it 1-1 and leave the tie completely open ahead of the return leg in Quito.
The Brazilian side had taken the lead in the 15th minute of the first half. A move initiated by Bruno Santos down the right resulted in a loose ball inside the box, which Eduardo pounced on before finishing low past Gonzalo Valle. The goal rewarded the home side’s clinical edge, as Mirassol quickly established an advantage despite the visitors having made the brighter start.
L.D.U. Quito’s response was immediate in footballing terms. The Ecuadorian side maintained their approach and began operating increasingly closer to Walter’s goal, with the goalkeeper taking risks whenever he played out with his feet. With Estrada leading the line and Janner Corozo providing a threat out wide, the visitors managed to exploit the spaces that began to open up behind Mirassol’s defensive line.
That was how Liga produced their best spell before the break. They found ways through on both flanks, won possession high up the pitch and forced the São Paulo side to defend deep near their own penalty area for extended periods. Walter made several important interventions to preserve the lead, while the crossbar also denied Estrada an equalizer when the striker found himself in a scoring position late in the first half.
Mirassol, still holding the lead, managed to change the complexion of the match after the break. With greater control of possession and their attacking players operating higher up the pitch, Rafael Guanaes’ side pushed the game away from their own goal and began to find spaces against a Liga team that was forced to take greater risks.
During that spell, the hosts had opportunities to extend their advantage and reshape the tie. Edson Carioca, Reinaldo and Bruno Santos were involved in some of Mirassol’s most dangerous attacking moves, as the Brazilian side appeared to have weathered the periods of strongest Ecuadorian pressure.
Liga, however, never stopped pushing. As the minutes passed, they once again began to threaten inside the opposition penalty area and were eventually rewarded for their persistence. In the 37th minute of the second half, Yerlin Quiñónez advanced down the left and sent the ball into the middle, Corozo got a touch on it and Estrada appeared in the kind of position goalscorers thrive in, firing a powerful finish into the net to make it 1-1 and continue his excellent run of form.
The goal was the first Mirassol had conceded at home in this edition of the CONMEBOL Libertadores. Their home record had remained intact throughout the Group Stage, but Liga managed to breach it in the first knockout match ever played by the São Paulo side in the history of the competition.
The two teams will now return to a venue they both know well. During the Group Stage, each side won at home, with Liga de Quito claiming a 2-0 victory over Mirassol at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado. They will meet there again next Thursday, August 20, this time with no margin for error: after the 1-1 draw in Brazil, the winner will advance to the CONMEBOL Libertadores Quarterfinals.
