Independiente del Valle were clinical when the opportunity arose and resilient when the match demanded it. The Ecuadorian side defeated Deportes Tolima 1-0 at the Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro and will return to Quito with a narrow but valuable advantage in their CONMEBOL Libertadores Round of 16 tie.

Tolima started with intent and created their first openings inside the opening ten minutes. Junior Hernández forced a save from Aldair Quintana, while Jorge Hurtado went close with a low effort across goal. However, the visitors made their first clear chance count: Emerson Pata created space for himself down the flank and delivered a cross into the area, where Arón Rodríguez rose to head past Neto Volpi.

The goal changed the complexion of the match. Independiente del Valle dropped a few metres deeper, closed off the central spaces and prepared to attack whenever they regained possession. Tolima, who also lost Brayan Rovira to injury before the 20-minute mark, took territorial control and enjoyed more of the ball, although for much of the first half they struggled to break down the Ecuadorian defensive block. Luis Sánchez, who replaced Rovira, had one of the best chances before the interval with a shot that went narrowly wide.

The Colombian side increased the intensity from the start of the second half. Junior Hernández came within inches of equalising with a free-kick that struck the post, while Aldair Quintana, one of the standout performers of the match, responded once again to deny Jorge Hurtado. The clearest opportunity arrived shortly afterwards when Homer Martínez found space inside the area and struck with his left foot, but the visiting goalkeeper stood firm to preserve the lead.

Independiente del Valle withstood their opponents’ growing pressure without completely abandoning their attacking intent. Júnior Sornoza looked to create danger from set pieces, while the Ecuadorian side found space on the counter as Tolima pushed further forward. Although they were unable to extend their advantage, they managed to move the game away from their own goal for significant spells and saw out the closing minutes with composure.

The final whistle confirmed Independiente del Valle as the only winners across the eight first-leg matches in the Round of 16. Tolima enjoyed more possession and continued to push until the end, but were unable to overcome the visitors’ resistance. The tie will be decided next Tuesday, August 25 in Quito, with the Ecuadorian side taking a one-goal advantage to the Estadio Banco Guayaquil and the Colombian team needing to overturn the deficit.
