• The draw for the CONMEBOL Libertadores Round of 16 took place on Friday 29 May.
   
• The 16 remaining teams now know their opponents for the first knockout round and the path they must follow in their pursuit of glory.

The CONMEBOL Libertadores Round of 16 draw determined the fate of the 16 qualified teams, who now know their opponents and the path they must take in pursuit of La Gloria Eterna.

The Round of 16 will be played in August. The first legs will take place between 11 and 13 August at the home grounds of the group-stage runners-up, before the ties are decided in the return legs between 18 and 20 August at the stadiums of the group winners.

It will mark the first step in the knockout phase, a journey that will conclude in Montevideo on 28 November.

Estudiantes v Universidad Católica 

A tie between two teams that showed their character during the group stage. El Pincha secured an unforgettable last-gasp qualification against Independiente Medellín, while Los Cruzados rose to the occasion away from home to book their place in the Round of 16 against Boca Juniors at La Bombonera.

First leg: Tuesday 11 August at 21:30 at the Estadio UNO Jorge Luis Hirschi, La Plata

Second leg: Tuesday 18 August at 20:30 at the Claro Arena, Santiago, Chile

Rosario Central v Corinthians 

El Canalla face a major challenge against Fernando Diniz’s Timão. It is a rivalry with previous chapters: in the 2000 CONMEBOL Libertadores, the sides contested a thrilling Round of 16 tie in which the Brazilian club prevailed on penalties after a 5-5 aggregate draw.

With Ángel Di María as their attacking figurehead, Jorge Almirón will attempt to reach his third final as a coach. To do so, he must overcome Diniz’s side, led by the man who won the 2023 edition with Fluminense.

Second leg: Thursday 20 August at 21:30 at the Neo Química Arena, São Paulo

Cruzeiro v Flamengo 

An all-Brazilian encounter in the CONMEBOL Libertadores Round of 16. The defending champions will look to retain their crown, but their first obstacle will be a side that survived a difficult group, finishing above two powerful opponents in Boca Juniors and Barcelona de Guayaquil to secure their place among the competition’s final 16.

First leg: Wednesday 12 August at 21:30 at the Estadio Mineirão, Belo Horizonte

Second leg: Wednesday 19 August at 21:30 at the Estadio Maracanã, Rio de Janeiro

Deportes Tolima v Independiente del Valle 

Deportes Tolima and Independiente del Valle will contest a meeting between two clearly defined styles and two teams accustomed to competing on the biggest nights.

The Colombian side will look to make their intensity, organisation and home support count, while their Ecuadorian opponents arrive backed by an established model, a clear identity and international experience that has already made them one of the continent’s most difficult teams to face.

First leg: Tuesday 11 August at 19:30 at the Estadio Manuel Murillo Toro, Ibagué

Second leg: Tuesday 18 August at 19:30 at the Banco Guayaquil, Quito

Mirassol v Liga de Quito

Mirassol will face one of the most important challenges in their international history against Liga de Quito, a club with vast continental experience and one accustomed to performing on this stage.

The Brazilian side, one of the tournament’s most exciting emerging teams, will look to maintain the momentum of a group-stage campaign that carried them into the final 16. On the other side will be an Ecuadorian team with continental know-how, quality and a wealth of competitive experience.

This will be one of three rematches from the group stage. Liga de Quito won 2-0 in Quito, before Mirassol made home advantage count by claiming an identical victory in Brazil.

First leg: Thursday 13 August at 19:00 at the José María de Campos Maia, Mirassol

Second leg: Thursday 20 August at 17:00 at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, Quito 

Palmeiras v Cerro Porteño 

Palmeiras and Cerro Porteño will meet again in a tie with the feel of a continental classic. Verdão, one of the most consistent teams on the continent in recent years, will aim to take another step forward in a competition they know inside out and in which they are always considered among the favourites.

El Ciclón, meanwhile, will look to draw on their character, history and passionate support to trouble one of the toughest opponents in the competition. It promises to be a high-intensity encounter between a Brazilian giant and a Paraguayan club that often rises to occasions of this magnitude.

Cerro have the upper hand from their most recent meetings. The teams drew 1-1 in Asunción on Matchday 3 of Group F, before El Ciclón produced a surprise away victory on Matchday 5 through Pablo Vegetti’s goal.

Platense v Coquimbo Unido 

Platense and Coquimbo Unido will contest an unprecedented tie filled with hope. Two of the tournament’s surprise packages will battle for a place in the quarter-finals.

El Calamar, in the midst of a historic international campaign, will aim to extend a journey that has already marked a turning point in the club’s history. They will face a Chilean side that has also used the CONMEBOL Libertadores as a platform to compete, develop and establish itself on the continental stage.

Both teams have reached the Round of 16 with ambition and character, and with a genuine opportunity to add further chapters to an unforgettable story.

First leg: Wednesday 12 August at 19:00 at the Estadio Ciudad de Vicente López, Vicente López

Second leg: Wednesday 19 August at 18:00 at the Estadio Francisco Sánchez Rumoroso, Coquimbo

Fluminense v Independiente Rivadavia 

Fluminense and Independiente Rivadavia will contest one of the most attractive ties in the Round of 16. The Brazilian side, boasting quality, possession-based football and international know-how, will look to make their experience count against one of the competition’s biggest surprise packages.

La Lepra Mendocina, who already stunned Flu during the group stage, will once again face opponents with an illustrious continental history as they attempt to extend their historic adventure.

Alfredo Berti’s side claimed a 2-1 victory at the Maracanã and were also on course to win in Mendoza until John Kennedy struck in second-half stoppage time to rescue a point that proved decisive in Fluminense’s qualification.

On the road to La Gloria Eterna

The 16 teams will compete for a place in the final, which will be played in Montevideo on 28 November. There, they will battle for the continent’s most coveted club trophy: the CONMEBOL Libertadores, a competition that represents the ultimate dream for football fans across South America.

In addition to adding the title to their trophy cabinet, the champions will receive US$25 million in prize money. The figure represents a historic increase for the competition, as announced by CONMEBOL President Alejandro Domínguez, and continues a trend that has seen the tournament’s financial rewards grow significantly in recent years.

With packed stadiums, demanding journeys, unforgettable nights and ties steeped in history, the Round of 16 will open a new chapter on the road to La Gloria Eterna.
