Agustín Giay needed 98 appearances to score his first goal for Palmeiras. The wait could hardly have ended at a more important moment: the Argentine full-back, formerly of San Lorenzo and with the Brazilian club since June 2024, scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over Liga de Quito that gave his side the advantage in the first leg of their CONMEBOL Libertadores Quarter-final.
The move that decided the match began with a long ball from Alexander Barboza. Vitor Roque held off Ricardo Ade, worked his way into the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot that Gonzalo Valle parried into the air. Giay had followed the move down the right and arrived by surprise to score with a diving header in the 25th minute of the first half.
The goal rewarded his constant attacking involvement. Operating as the right wing-back in Abel Ferreira’s three-centre-back system, the Argentine found space to push forward and came close to scoring again before the break, when he was unable to make clean contact with a cross delivered from the opposite flank by Uruguayan Joaquín Piquerez.
A constant presence in the opposition half, his contribution was not limited to the attacking end. In the second half, as Liga pushed hard for an equaliser, Giay produced an intervention every bit as important as his goal. Alexander Alvarado diverted the ball beyond the advancing Carlos Miguel and, just as José Carabalí was preparing to finish into an unguarded net, the full-back made a decisive recovery run and managed to turn the ball behind for a corner. The play capped a perfect night in which Giay proved decisive at both ends: he scored the only goal of the match and prevented one of the Ecuadorian side’s most dangerous chances.
The performance also underlined his growing attacking influence. Just 12 days earlier, he had registered his first assist for Palmeiras in a 3-0 victory over Santos in the Copa do Brasil. After a long wait, his first assist and first goal for the club arrived less than two weeks apart.
The goal against Liga was only the third of his club career. He had scored twice in 88 appearances for San Lorenzo and had yet to find the net since joining Palmeiras in 2024. His first goal for the club came on a special night, against high-quality opposition and at a decisive stage of the CONMEBOL Libertadores.
At 22, the former Argentina U-20 captain produced his most complete performance yet in a ‘Verdão’ shirt. From box to box, Giay delivered when Palmeiras needed him most. Now established as one of the key figures in Ferreira’s starting XI, his name is also emerging as a potential part of Argentina’s post-2026 World Cup renewal: Lionel Scaloni had already called him up for the March 2026 international friendly window. Although he ultimately did not travel to the World Cup, if he maintains the level he showed in São Paulo, a future with the senior Argentina national team appears increasingly difficult to ignore.
