Pablo Repetto’s team weathered Caracas’ pressure during the first half before striking with ruthless efficiency after the break. With Mosquera providing security between the posts and the attack showing impressive effectiveness, ‘El Cardenal’ displayed the kind of football that allows them to dream big in La Gran Conquista.
‘El Rojo’ started the match determined to take control, driven by the need to overturn the 2-0 deficit from the first leg in Bogotá. In that context, Jeriel De Santis emerged as one of the hosts’ main attacking threats during the opening 45 minutes. In the 10th minute, the striker turned on the edge of the box and tried to pick out the far corner, but Andrés Mosquera, Santa Fe’s goalkeeper, reacted well to keep his goal intact.
After the hydration break, the man between the posts for Pablo Repetto’s side was called into action again and responded effectively. Eduardo Fereira drove forward and picked out Venezuelan midfielder Wilfred Correa with a long ball, but Mosquera got down well at his near post to hold the powerful low effort.
Shortly before halftime, Rodallega — one of the standout players from the first leg — had Independiente’s only clear chance of the opening half. He found space and tried his luck from distance, but Benítez was able to make the save.
Ten minutes into the second half, the Colombian side broke the deadlock with a perfectly executed counterattack. Argentine forward Nahuel Bustos drove forward before laying the ball off to Jáder Obrian, who slipped a return pass through the defense and found Bustos again. He finished with composure to make it 1-0 and extend Santa Fe’s aggregate lead.
Caracas tried to respond immediately, but once again ran into the outstanding Mosquera, who denied Venezuelan Robert Hernández an equalizer. Midway through the second half, Santa Fe took advantage of Caracas’ need to push forward, exploiting the spaces left by the Venezuelan side as they committed numbers to attack. The second goal came down the left: Argentine winger Maximiliano Lovera burst forward and found Rodallega, whose effort took a deflection off Ángel Figueroa and widened the visitors’ advantage.
Santa Fe’s third soon followed, created by two substitutes brought on to inject fresh energy into the attack. Alexis Zapata beat his marker in tight space before switching play to Argentine Franco Fagúndez, who cut onto his stronger foot and guided a precise finish into the corner to make it 3-0.
River Plate, who qualified as group winners, will be Santa Fe’s next opponent in the Round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, with the ties set to be played between August 11 and 20.
