The Uruguayan team secured an important 1-0 victory over the 'Matador' in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16. Franco Pizzichillo, one of City Torque's key players, scored the decisive goal.
The José Dellagiovanna Stadium provided the setting for another international night. The first half saw two sides more intent on cancelling each other out than committing men forward, in stark contrast to what they had shown in the Group Stage — both had ranked among the three teams that had spent the most minutes in front: City Torque with 300 minutes and Tigre with 294.
The first genuine chance came midway through the opening half and involved Tigre captain Joaquín Laso. After a series of ricochets inside the six-yard box and receiving a clever pass from Jabes Saralegui, the defender got his shot away but was denied by a strong save from Uruguayan goalkeeper Franco Torgnascioli.
In the closing stages of the first half, Felipe Zenobio produced a superb save to keep the scores level. Salomón Rodríguez rose inside the box and headed towards the corner, but the 'Matador' goalkeeper flew to his left to keep out the 'Celeste' side's opener.
When the early stages of the second half appeared to be swinging in Tigre's favour, Pizzichillo struck in the 53rd minute to put Marcelo Méndez's side ahead.
A deflection off Banegas wrong-footed Zenobio, who could do nothing to prevent the goal. But it was the build-up that stood out: the midfielder, who covered enormous ground throughout the match, dropped several yards to create space for himself and offer Ezequiel Busquets a passing option.
Salomón Rodríguez, following a lapse in Tigre's defensive line, had the chance to double the 'Ciudadanos' lead, but once again Zenobio came out on top in the one-on-one to minimise the danger for the home side.
Diego Dabove turned to his substitutes' bench. Santiago González, Mauro Méndez and Ian Subiabre were introduced to bring greater clarity to Tigre's attack, with the home side doing enough to earn an equaliser but lacking the clinical edge required to find one.
City Torque ended a run of two defeats away to Argentine opposition — a 3-1 loss to Independiente in 2021 and a 2-1 defeat by Riestra in the current edition — and will now decide the tie at home next Wednesday in Montevideo, carrying a valuable advantage into the second leg.

- Montevideo City Torque manager Marcelo Méndez made three changes to the starting XI that faced Tigre compared with their previous match in the 2026 CONMEBOL Sudamericana, fielding the club's youngest starting side in the competition this year, with an average age of 27 years and 336 days.
