- Cienciano defeated Montevideo City Torque 2-0 in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana quarter-finals at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.
- Cristian Souza and Maximiliano Amondarain, both Uruguayans, scored the goals for the Peruvian side.
The side managed by Argentine Horacio Melgarejo secured a significant, but not definitive, advantage in the first leg. The tie will be decided next Thursday in the Uruguayan capital. The winners will face the side that comes through the tie between Santos and Atlético Mineiro.
Cienciano threatened with their first attack: Carlos Garcés met a good cross from Alejandro Hohberg with a header, but Franco Torgnascioli, City Torque's goalkeeper, gathered comfortably.
Hohberg was involved again soon after. The forward headed a cross from Carlos Cabello, following a good run down the right, inside the six-yard box, but could not beat the Uruguayan goalkeeper. Shortly afterwards, Gary Kagelmacher, captain of the side managed by Marcelo Méndez, cleared Garcés' effort off the line to keep his team level.
Cienciano had already shown enough to suggest they could take the lead, and they did so in the 28th minute. Neri Bandiera led a solo run down the left before sending a cross towards the far post, where Uruguayan Cristian Souza arrived to turn the ball home and put the Peruvian side 1-0 up.
Shortly before half-time, another Uruguayan player from the Peruvian side got his name on the scoresheet. Centre-back Maximiliano Amondarain, Cienciano's first outlet when building attacks, advanced into the opposition half and tried his luck from distance. His low, angled effort went in tight to Torgnascioli's left-hand post to give 'Papá' a 2-0 lead at the break.
The 'Citizens' made the brighter start to the second half. With their first clear chance of the match, Facundo Silvera tried a shot from the left, and Salomón Rodríguez pounced on Ítalo Espinoza's save, but his follow-up went over the bar.
Marcelo Méndez's side threatened again through the same route, with Gonzalo Montes seeing his effort fly narrowly over the crossbar. The Cusco side responded and came close to extending their lead, but Bandiera could not direct his header from Marcos Martinich's cross from the left.
In the closing stages, Eduardo Agüero cleared off the line to save Montevideo City Torque after a succession of chances in which Torgnascioli and the Uruguayan defence prevented their goal from being breached again.
The second leg will be played in Montevideo next Thursday to determine who will face the winner of the tie between Santos and Atlético Mineiro.

Since then, only one Peruvian side had registered more efforts on target before half-time: Melgar against Patronato in the fourth round of the 2023 CONMEBOL Libertadores (eight).
