‘La Bombonera’ will be rocking for a clash steeped in tradition: Boca, the only side to have won the CONMEBOL Sudamericana in consecutive editions, welcome São Paulo, champions in 2012, in what will be the fifth knockout tie between the two clubs in CONMEBOL competitions and the first since the Round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana 2007. On that occasion, the ‘Xeneize’ won 2-1 at home, the São Paulo ‘Tricolor’ prevailed 1-0 at the Morumbi and the Brazilian side went through.
Boca arrive in their best form of the season. After dropping into the CONMEBOL Sudamericana from the CONMEBOL Libertadores and eliminating O’Higgins on penalties in the Playoffs, Rodolfo Arruabarrena’s side swept aside Recoleta in the Round of 16: a 3-1 win at the Estadio Tomás Adolfo Ducó followed by a 4-0 victory in Asunción, with goals from Santiago Ascacíbar, Sebastián Villa, Miguel Merentiel and Alan Velasco in the second leg, completing a 7-1 aggregate triumph. Merentiel and Ascacíbar, with three goals each in continental competition this season, lead the team’s attacking output in a squad that combines Leandro Paredes’ experience with the emergence of youngsters such as Leonel Flores, who scored a stunning goal in the first leg against the Paraguayans.

São Paulo, meanwhile, are the only side yet to find themselves behind in this edition. Following a 1-1 draw against Bolívar in La Paz, Dorival Júnior’s team settled the tie at the MorumBIS with a 3-1 victory: Luciano opened the scoring, Dairon Asprilla equalised for the Bolivians, before Jonathan Calleri and Sabino sealed qualification. Luciano, with three goals, is São Paulo’s leading scorer in this edition and is one goal away from breaking into the competition’s all-time top five. Calleri, a São Paulo idol who previously played for Boca, returns to La Bombonera as one of the tie’s key figures.
The tie has a chapter that Boca fans still remember: that 2007 elimination, with the aggregate score level, was decided by the away-goals rule, which is no longer in use. Two decades on, the ‘Xeneize’ are chasing their third ‘Great Conquest’, while São Paulo are seeking their second, with one statistic favouring the visitors: seven wins in their last nine matches against Argentine opponents in CONMEBOL competitions.
